Anyone in the club running the disk brake conversion on their rig?
Looking for feedback on it.
Thanks,
Justin

Eventually I would like to go up to a 33inch tire and since the rear axle is tore apart I figured maybe I would convert it if it was worth it. Guess not...
I guess there in a tcase ebrake some use.
...
Kevin, any chance you would know if the bearing retainer that is in the actual brake assembly has to be removed in order to replace the outer seal?

your sigline only mentions FZJ80 and UZJ100

I also have a 1985 4runner.
I must have missed it - didn't know they came with drums - not that I need to know, either Seems like I remember hearing that the rear drum brakes were upgraded when they went to the wider rear axle housing, like in 86 or 87, at least on the mini trucks. JohnI also have a 1985 4runner.
Don't know for sure, but they looks the same. I have one under my trailer, and they don't look any different to me. Probably get a solid answer from the minitruck forum. I don't know how much "improvement" there was, as I have never pulled a drum to look. JohnJohn, do you know if I can just swap a rear axle assembly in from an 86 without issues? If the rear axle ended up wider then I would need to add spacers up front to correct? Just wondering...
My rear drums work well on my truck and its on the heavier side and pushing 37" Krawlers, but I find it to be ok. I upgraded the fronts a long time ago with the FJ60 rotors, Toyota pads and IFS calipers which work great. I think rebuilding the rear drums would be the route I'd go before rear discs. Maybe try out the larger FJ60 wheel cylinders and upgrade the booster and master.
I have a few friends who have done the rear disc swaps. It certainly works well, the biggest issue lies with the parking brake problem. Like mentioned, dont waste your money on the tcase setups.
This has been the setup I have seen work very well here as far as a rear disc brake conversion. It did make a big improvement.
