Just look at the base of the distributor to confirm its installed all the way to engage the oil pump.
Also, the timing can be off, it won't damage anything.....might not run good though.

Where it was it was firing on the exhaust stroke.

The only thing that bothers me about that distributor is their is no flange to know when you are fully seated and if it slips in the clamp it can rise up and disengage with the oil pump.

Yes but when I got it in I didn't quite know where #1 was in the new distributor and i got it roughly in the general area of #4 plug. So yesterday I marked on the body of the new dizzy where #1 would be and marked the push rod cover and now I got it really close to #1 plug wire.

So I am getting a lot closer. I needed to get the distributor re-timed

firing on the exhaust stroke.

Got it better now firing at #1 spot. But having done that I needed to make sure the dizzy is driving the oil pump. After cranking on the starter for a couple of cycles I saw that there was oil coming out of the rockers. Minor happy dance. But when I pulled the plug wires off of the #6 wire socket stayed on the plug. Since it was still new I got them warrantied and new ones in. Yet she still won't start. So I checked the fuses, power to the distributor, timing, and spark. Tonight I plan on replacing the F fuel pump back to the 2F pump. The F pump seems to be seeping on the bottom gasket.

I decided to go back to the 2F fuel pump and as I was trying to get it in and everything lined up the lever twisted just a bit and the lever spring popped out and is now in the bottom of the oil pan.

I hope so. A guy at work said he would cut his losses by if he was in my situation. That ALMOST sounds even slightly appealing. But I really don't want to do that.
