Installed a mechanical Oil Pressure gauge in the old stock 66 FJ-40. I used an adapter from egauges.com as in the below link.

http://www.egauges.com/vdo_acce.asp?Subgroup=BSP_OTOD&Manf=All

One 1/8" NPT side was plugged. The stock pressure sensor was on the back and the new copper line came out the other side outlet.

Before the installation, the stock gauge went up to 1/4 at idle and higher as the RPMs increased. After the installation, the stock gauge read nearly 1/2 scale at idle and the mechanical gauge read 50 PSI.

Questions - Does the copper line to be bled to get the air out? Why the increase in pressure?

In messing with the stock sender you may either have dislodged some crap that was causing a low reading or by connecting and disconnecting the sender wire it's now making better contact. You do not need to bleed the line.

I'm considering adding a mechanical oil pressure gauge to my FJ40 and was wondering if the adapter in the link above will fit into the oil filter bracket where the oil pressure sending unit attaches on the 2F? Does anyone know what the thread size is for the oil pressure sending unit?

Yes. Same sending unit, therefore, same threaded fittings.

1/8 bsp, real close to 1/8 npt, just one more tpi 28 vs 27:beer:

Yup, I just got a T-fitting in 1/8 npt from the hardware store. Didn't cost 20 bucks...

I have cleaned the insides of senders with an aerosol solvent and a red 'straw'. It can make a huge difference on how the gauge reads. Instant gratification, kinda like 'engine rebuild in a can'...

As suggested, I picked up a 1/8" NPT T-fitting from the hardware store for $1.99. So, did you retap the oil filter bracket with a 1/8" NPT tap to accept the T-fitting?

Are oil pressure senders considered a wear item? How do you know when they need to be replaced? I've just spent a lot of time and money on a completed rebuild of a 2F and I'm going to use both the sending unit and a mechanical oil pressure gauge - trust but verify.

My experience is that you can screw a 10mm into a 1/8th NPT female hole (with thread sealant), but you can not screw a 1/8th NPT into a 10mm female hole. In that case MDMetrics makes a 10mm male to 1/8th NPT female adapter---easy deal, google them!!!

I've been searching for a set of gauges I could put on the 2f. They need to be small 1 1/2 inch and glycerin filled. I figured if the in cab gauge was acting funny I could always pop the hood and take a peak.

Northern Tool just came out with a new catalog that has tons of stuff. Lots of Glycerin filled gauges.

I'm gonna buy two pressure gauges
0-15 for fuel pressure
0-100 for oil pressure

And heck I'll buy one for coolant pressure.
0-150

Also have a gauge for vaccum

All for under 16 dollars each.

Now if I could find a temp gauge that was 1 1/2 I'd be set.

kvanoort, In the mid 70's I had a '71 toyota hilux pickup (the kind with cruiser directionals on the fenders). One day the oil light started glowing at idle and I panicked and took it to the dealer. When I picked it up, it was just 30 bucks or so for a new sender and install. Ran it 225,000 mi, and it never happened again, so I guess they fail, but it's more likely that they clog and read lower. Anyways I cleaned the one on my first cruiser, and have done it on every one since. It can make a dramatic difference, and I LOVE high op. I suggest everyone try this...

I'll take your advice and simply clean out the oil pressure sending unit that I have and I'll use the money I saved to buy the mechanical op guage. Thanks. :D
