Massive radiator leak with overtheat

Rich is a good guy, and I'm happy to see he's going above and beyond to make this right. I'm sure that technician got a good write up, if not fired. Contrary to most people's opinion, the service department is not usually a big profit center, so likely they will run at a loss for a month or two just paying for this one case. I say two thumbs up for a happy ending!

Can't ask for a better result... The reality is that nobody can say one way or another that the radiator exploded because of how it was handled. We've all seen 17-20 year old radiators blow time and time again (some twice in one week). Ultimately they are accepting responsibility and replacing what was damaged. It all worked out.

Having said all of this I heard some complaining about the price they charged for certain things to be done. If you don't have the knowledge or time then the cost they charge you is irrelevant.

The radiator was 3.5 years old with no known issues. The 15 year old original had a tiny leak in 2011 so I had it replaced.

I don't think people understand how hot your engine was. You are much better off with a different engine, That one's junk. It would be one thing after another, this Is the smart move. Good Luck Man..!

I went to the dealership and met Rich. He assured me of new front crank, rear main, water pump, valve cover and and distributor gaskets/o-rings. I'll ask him about the VC, oil pump and oil pan gaskets.

He said they will re-mill the head then do a new head gasket, pressure and compression tests. He will break it down and check all the internals including the bearings et. al.

I will receive a 1 year, unlimited mileage warranty.

He did say the cross hatching was still present in the cylinder walls he looked at. Good sign for all of us as it had 198,xxx miles on it.

If they are going to install a lower mileage one, please ask them to do new seals on the front main, rear main, oil pans, VC, Distributor, oil pump, water pump, etc so you can have confidence in what was installed and not end up with a leaker after you get it going.

Even if they are to install a used one, they SHOULD check the bearings and integrity of the unit before installing, and not just blindly installing, only relying on the warranty of whomever it came from.

Sorry to hear the bad luck.

I believe in happy endings. Fat lady hasn't sung yet on this one but it appears promising.

The sudden loss of coolant is not picked up on coolant recovery systems, this is the reason I wanted the sudden coolant loss sensor in my top hose, links with a light and buzzer on the dashboard, along with a low oil pressure light and buzzer and the same for overheating.

Modern cars that have sealed systems can have a sensor in the expansion tank, unfortunately this system would have been good on the 80.

Dave

No, the vehicle still has the mileage shown on it. it doesn't matter if you put a brand new engine in it, it still has what is shown. Same applies if you put in an engine with more miles than shown. It is what it is......

I thought about rolling back my odo after my rebuild since the truck would be buried with me. My insurance friend says nope, no can do. When I rebuilt the motor the odo was at 298k. I thought seriously about moving it to 300k so I could have an even number to start with. Just ran out of time so never got around to it. I've since put 42k on my rebuild. :(
