what about map lights that actually plug right into the cig lighter and dont haev any cords or wires??

Don't know about your truck but my cig lighter plug is pretty low on the dash for that. I wanted my light high enough to use to read a map, or book, held in my hands at nornal reading height.

I purchased one from this vendor a while ago and it kicks ass.

For about $40.00 you are getting a great deal!

Exactly.. that and my 3 plugs are constantly being used up to charge cell phones, power the new tri-band radio, charge the mp3 player, GPS, seat heater, or tablet pc, charge camera batteries, the list goes on. Granted I need to permanently wire some of those things but it seems cig lighter plug real estate is at a premium on trips. I have a backpack just to carry techie/electronics cables, batteries, adapters, chargers, etc..

Hey Dyno, how/where did you mount this light? Have a picture to share?

Thanks!

That looks like a screamin' deal. Looks like the 12V littlite with a funky plug.

I got mine in and it's got very good build quality. Mine is a little different than the ebay one as it has two LEDs- one high output blue/white for bright light (about 4 ft wide, 2 ft tall dispersion at 1 ft- measured against the underneath of my hood), and a 2nd LED that is red and has about half the dispersion.

It's a great product. Going to mount it on the vertical surface just to the left of the glove box door on the FJ62.

here's that pic I was talking about a month or so back.

One thing to keep in mind when it comes to map lights is the ability to dim as necessary. A traditional incandescent bulb will allow you to do this; not sure of LEDs. In the case of the Oshram lights, they have an aperture dial on top of the light that is twisted to control the light dimming.

Just a FYI.

We used the red LEDs quite a bit on the Littlite recently on a week-long trip around Canada. White was too bright after the sun dropped and red was very comfortable for reading. White is nice for utility when you need to see something or are stopped- it is too distracting while driving.

We have been using red lights in our patrol cars for years. It doesnt take away our " night eyes"

A removable option is the type that can mount on your melon, petzel style LED head lamp.....Versitile and can go from passenger to pasenger when driving...just don't look directly at the driver when you have it on...:hillbilly:

I second using a head lamp. Some of them even have remote battery packs. With one of them it shouldn't be to hard to replace the battery pack with a 12VDC to 4.5VDC(3 cell) or 3VDC(2 cell) converter.

FWIW. . I did a bunch or research on map lights a couple of months ago and it became clear to me that the Littlite stuff was the best way to go. I called around and found out that a.) the stuff is made in the US and b.) has a lifetime warranty. They have a small light that plugs into the cig plug the guy at the factory told me it's not LED because they wanted it to be less than $20.00 and still work well.

I bought two of the LED lights and couldn't be happier. I'm getting two more to mount on the headboard in my house for reading lights for the wife and I. (These things mount anywhere!)
