Plenty of people have the skills and capability to build a carbon fibre box.
Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Rocketdyne-AeroJet, Trek, Specialized, and others, just to name a few. Not to mention the multitude of manufacturers in China.
The thing is, there isn't enough of a market for these things for those companies to justify the expense of setting up the tooling to do so. I think that carbon fibre has it's uses, but one of those uses is most DEFINITLY not in places where the structure is exposed to rock strikes.
I think an Earth Romer would be great as it's got enough power and tow capacity that I could put my FJ40 or Tacoma on a flatbed and trailer it where I need to go. Wheel the 'Cruiser, sleep in the earth romer. Also, I'd be willing to bet that you'd not take a Maltec the same places you'd take a trail prepped 80/100/200, as the camper would be too much weight.
Maltec has built over 300 light weight carbon fiber boxes in the last 10 years on a variety of platforms but there love is the Land Cruisers platform. With that said it would difficult to even get some like Boeing or the likes to even consider the task. Maltec knows what it takes to build an expedition truck that can take a beating with the capabilities to go more places than 90% of the people would be willing to go. I too was hesitant of the trucks capabilities when approached to guide a 5 day 1000 mile off road trip for Maltec with campers. At the end of the first day I knew Maltec was in a class of its own and it was easy to see why they have had been so successful.
From the trip I learned any of the 4 Maltec models had the abilities to go 90% of the places my 80 series would go and it would be easy to stand tall against any expedition truck made in the USA. When you talk about weight you are talking Maltec as my white 80 series (pictured below at 7100lbs) was heavier than any of Maltec's trucks present.
When you drive a Maltec you have no idea you are driving one of the worlds most capable expedition campers as it drive and wheels like a 200 series Land Cruiser. My wife drove the Maltec on and off road like she stole it and claimed it was as easy to drive as her Highlander and had zero issue driving at highway speeds. Personally I could daily drive the 200 Maltec.
Maltecs lacked experience in the rocks is partly why they asked me drive there trucks anywhere I wanted to see what I though. I have a tons of off road miles in a Maltec and only once did I back up in my travel and it was because I was In very tight area and did want to Arizona pin stripe a truck that was not mine. I found the trucks to have an excellent ride on washboard road with no cabin noise. At no time did any of the trucks feel top heavy again you have no idea driving you had a box on the back. The Land Cruiser below has factory lockers and went everywhere I wanted to go with total confidence.
Try this in your ER or any expedition truck
Maltecs other side as they use there 'campers' as chase vehicles

The 200 series is a family travel vehicle with sitting and sleeping for 4 and room for your dog. The cabin is heated using diesel from the 80 gal tank. It has hot water at the sink and a shower set up, fridge, stove, power system, and tons of storage. Every Matec is a oneoff build to suit the customers needs. The new USA trucks being built for EXPO will have
Wrappon toilets to meet the needs of the US market.
Maltec has been a wonderful eye opening experience bringing off road travel to new level in the US for me and my wife. When I first found out what the cost I said like many no way but after my experience if one was to become available I would be selling what ever it took.
