Maltec Trucks how cool are they? (2 Viewers)

Not really my thing, though, these are interesting. That said, for half what one of these conversions cost, I'll take an Airstream BaseCamp or Sport and have plenty of $$$ left over.

The great part of this industry is there are enough choices to make anyone happy:clap:

Who manufactures the wheels on the 80?

ER is not close to being in the same class as Maltec. The one part that sticks out is you can actually wheel a Maltec as its a Land Cruiser. You can't even go through a drive through with a ER much less take it on a trail.

Used earth roamers go for about 200k at least the ones I have seen, new ones about 490k
look on ebay there is on right now asking 150000 $

Price could go down as production increases but so far no one in the USA have the skills or capability to build a carbon fiber box.:(
Sounds like you see fair value in an ER no worries I think its great when one finds something that meets their needs. But to be clear a Maltec conversion of your late model 200 Land Cruiser start at 75K ;)

Plenty of people have the skills and capability to build a carbon fibre box.
Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Rocketdyne-AeroJet, Trek, Specialized, and others, just to name a few. Not to mention the multitude of manufacturers in China.

The thing is, there isn't enough of a market for these things for those companies to justify the expense of setting up the tooling to do so. I think that carbon fibre has it's uses, but one of those uses is most DEFINITLY not in places where the structure is exposed to rock strikes.

I think an Earth Romer would be great as it's got enough power and tow capacity that I could put my FJ40 or Tacoma on a flatbed and trailer it where I need to go. Wheel the 'Cruiser, sleep in the earth romer. Also, I'd be willing to bet that you'd not take a Maltec the same places you'd take a trail prepped 80/100/200, as the camper would be too much weight.

Really cool vehicle! Any idea of net weight gain after the camper replaces the rear half of the body? They might sell a LOT more of these if offered as a flatbed camper for a Tundra or similar full-sized truck.

Maltec has built over 300 light weight carbon fiber boxes in the last 10 years on a variety of platforms but there love is the Land Cruisers platform. With that said it would difficult to even get some like Boeing or the likes to even consider the task. Maltec knows what it takes to build an expedition truck that can take a beating with the capabilities to go more places than 90% of the people would be willing to go. I too was hesitant of the trucks capabilities when approached to guide a 5 day 1000 mile off road trip for Maltec with campers. At the end of the first day I knew Maltec was in a class of its own and it was easy to see why they have had been so successful.

From the trip I learned any of the 4 Maltec models had the abilities to go 90% of the places my 80 series would go and it would be easy to stand tall against any expedition truck made in the USA. When you talk about weight you are talking Maltec as my white 80 series (pictured below at 7100lbs) was heavier than any of Maltec's trucks present.

When you drive a Maltec you have no idea you are driving one of the worlds most capable expedition campers as it drive and wheels like a 200 series Land Cruiser. My wife drove the Maltec on and off road like she stole it and claimed it was as easy to drive as her Highlander and had zero issue driving at highway speeds. Personally I could daily drive the 200 Maltec.

Maltecs lacked experience in the rocks is partly why they asked me drive there trucks anywhere I wanted to see what I though. I have a tons of off road miles in a Maltec and only once did I back up in my travel and it was because I was In very tight area and did want to Arizona pin stripe a truck that was not mine. I found the trucks to have an excellent ride on washboard road with no cabin noise. At no time did any of the trucks feel top heavy again you have no idea driving you had a box on the back. The Land Cruiser below has factory lockers and went everywhere I wanted to go with total confidence.

Try ▼this▼ is your Land Cruiser

The 200 series is a family travel vehicle with sitting and sleeping for 4 and room for your dog. The cabin is heated using diesel from the 80 gal tank. It has hot water at the sink and a shower set up, fridge, stove, power system, and tons of storage. Every Matec is a oneoff build to suit the customers needs. The new USA trucks being built for EXPO will have Wrappon toilets to meet the needs of the US market.

Maltec has been a wonderful eye opening experience bringing off road travel to new level in the US for me and my wife. When I first found out what the cost I said like many no way but after my experience if one was to become available I would be selling what ever it took.

I agree 100% on the Tundra as I suggested the exact same thing. I was told they have no interest in being a production builder and like every build to suit the owner.:frown:

The carbon fiber box built weight is ~650lbs dry.

The total weight of the 200 series is less than my white Land Cruiser (7100lbs) below.

What is the 200 interior cabin seating like? Backseats and belts available for my two boys and a dog?

The total weight of the 200 series is less than my white Land Cruiser (7100lbs) below.

That makes sense, they replace a lot of OEM steel along with seats, sound deadening, carpet etc with a composite (& probably foam-core) shell. Curb weight on the '08 200 series when I weighed it in 2008 was ~5950 lbs, this being the diesel motor is probably heavier. All the more impressive that its around 7000ish fully loaded. Out of reach for most from a $$$ standpoint, but still impressive. Post more photos of the interior when you can @LandCruiserPhil !

Yes big need they are finding in the US. The first Maltec I brought home (200 chase truck) I was all excited and grabbed my wife to check it out. The first ting out of her mouth was where does the kid and dog go. Dont worry they have other models. One of the big concerns for us being from AZ was cooling. See first post as it insulated cabin is amazing.

Not a great pic but you can get the idea.
Every interior is different based on needs

One of my favorite 2 person interior. Love the drawer fridge just inside the door and the well fridge in the counter top (missing the lid)
Most of the guys on our trip only slept down stairs out of ease. You can add the cushions to make a full size bed down stairs if needed. All interiors are made by Phil a Master boat builder and are of the highest quality and make no noise going down the road as all drawers/storage is foamed lined.

saw lots of cool variations on the theme at Bad Kissingen 4x4 show in Germany. Lots of other makers and options. TLC heaven and overlanding wonders

That 1HTD 80 series looks amazing. Really envious. Are the popups just to give space to stand/move around inside or is there a sleeping platform in the popup? Basically wondering if you can sleep without the popup deployed (which is a huge advantage for stealth camping, depending on where you are).

People are complaining about the cost, but this doesn't seem that different from the money people spend on Sprinter van setups which are very popular right now. Just looking right now there are 10 converted Sprinter vans on my local Craigslist that are 35k-155k. They are not for exactly the same thing but clearly people are spending the money for the lifestyle they provide.

They all have up stairs and down stairs sleeping with the upstair bed platform ability to push up for standing room. Many owners when solo or with another do just stay down for room and convenience. You also have the option and the capabilities of full cabin black out to stealth camp in front of the police station without issue.

People will always complain about cost it an easy way of saying I cant afford one. I was one of those people when I first became involved with Maltec I told myself its not that much better than my poptop Land Cruiser 80 series. Well after spending a fair amount of time in a Maltec it is that much better then my poptop Land Cruiser. I can tell you if one was available today in the states I would be a buyer and after a couple trips my wife is now also on board because its that nice. With Maltec you travel and you go everywhere you want and do it fast, comfortable, and seamless.
