Got a call from a friend at work that was out shooting North of New River Road (West) this afternoon, and was playing the radio a bit too long - starter would click when they went to leave, but not start.

I was on the road in about 15 min with a minimum of bug-out gear and made it to them in about another 15, so he got out easy this time. He did have to hoof it almost a mile back through the trail to get to where I could find their turnoff, and luckily he saw me 'cruise past in time to call my cell and have me turn around. By then, he must have been tired and thirsty, and I cautioned him about staying with the vehicle, but truth be told, I wouldn't have found them if he didn't walk out to the main road to meet me.

Gave him a lift back to the Jeep and 2 minutes later had it cranked over and running. They had several bags of trash they'd picked up from their shooting site while waiting for me, but I wasn't there to do any shooting, and we headed out.

I followed them to be sure he'd hit the blacktop in case the battery was completely dead, and since he lives in Anthem, it was a short drive for both of us. Less than an hour door to door for the recovery, and a great excuse to get out and get the rig dirty (albeit unplanned).

When I got home, I got the Hi-Lift X-Treme that was sitting in the shipping box since last week mounted on the Slee carrier.

Do most people carry some length of 3/8" chain for various purposes? How much is prudent to drag along with me?

Is it a normal occurance to be rescuing Jeeps when you drive a Land Cruiser? (heh)

I thought this story would be he was stuck...oh well , only a battery but still a LC comes to the rescue

Toyota electrons are better than Jeep electrons ;p

If the radio kills your battery, it's time for a new one.

Well, without a battery to jump from (and in a vehicle that could get out to where they were) - he WAS stuck, Murf!

Thanks for the gear tip, LCPhil - I stopped by my local Lowe's on the way home this evening to look for some chain, and they had a pre-built 20' 4500lb test 5/16" chain section with hooks on both ends. I asked the guys to cut it in the middle for me, so I'd have 2x 10' sections with a hook on one end, and bought some quick links to go along with it. The chain broke their first cutter, and they had to complete the cut on the 2nd hydraulic cutter they have in the store. I was impressed with the strength of it.

Add another 10lbs to the back of my rig, I suppose, but I'm gradually building my recovery gear setup.
