I personally don’t have a use for triple locked,
Few people do and of the ones that do 95% would be fine with CC. The triple lock halo thing is usually just in people’s mind and used to upsell. At least that’s what happens with the 80s when people go nuts paying a huge premium for those and drive them at the beach or worse to the closest mall. I suspect that’s what’s going to happen with the 700, especially considering the price tag on those.

The whole point of a Land Cruiser is that it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Most people aren’t exploring the limits of capability, but they like to know it’s there.

Same with Wranglers. Or Raptors. Or Powerwagons. Or G-Wagons.

Some people are like me, however, and will put the vehicle in a situation on literally day 1 of ownership where all 3 lockers are needed and used.

The ones who really use this, will not accept CC. In fact, lockers are what got me to buy this platform, as the LX600 left me cold and was too much like a 200.

Like I said, 95%. You guys that bought $120k cars and go right away put them to the test are maybe less than 1% of the buyers and I do admire you for that. After all, LCs were made for that in the first place. Now, a RAV4 certainly won’t suffice most of MY needs, but the CC on my 200 will.

@MRego Yeah a Tahoe 4x4 could probably do what I need. Little too chicky and common for me.

As long as this Rav4 keeps me happy I am going to do my best to avoid the new car urge.

This could go in the re-fresh thread too but….

I always get the new car “urge” when a re-fresh comes out. But for ME, it’s gotta be substantial to my fit own needs. And then I remember my truck is paid off, the newness is gone so I’m not as neurotic with it and I start to get very comfortable with it aging and broken in. It might just be me but I really don’t love getting new vehicles. Once I know what I have is running and looking perfect I forget about the new re-fresh and before I know it another re-fresh is coming out. This is the reason I kept my 2011 LC for so long. I like the idea of the lockers but I just won’t use them to justify the 700 or even looking to add them to my 600.

Coincidentally, this kinda represents our discussion here. Not a fan of some of his clickbait bait but sometimes his content is interesting. Although, for some reason, he did not use CC, it shows that for those 1% situations the triple lock is the superior solution. However, I would argue that for that last obstacle there I have done pretty worse terrain just with center diff locked and some throttle modulation and momentum using the 200 V8 fairly easier and would not need triple locks for those obstacles. I kinda agree with his conclusion in the end. If only the LX didn’t have that stupid chin. Enjoy.

The 300 is obviously superior. We need some real RTI ramp test results. The only ones out there they tested in Normal mode.

I've watched his videos and I have to say, holy hell it was like pulling teeth watching him try to off-road.

Yeah he was a little nervous about tearing up loaner test cars…

It was actually pretty informative though. That was all basic stuff where he had to use the CC and lockers. He hit every single locker button.

Really pretty good video, that is what they will do right there in the video on basic no spotter type of trails going in unlocked.

Agree. I can understand being s... pants about the loaner cars, but I think the 200 and 250 are his own cars and both had sliders. He dig a pretty big hole with the 250 and 200 and made it even harder for the 300 going last. I guess that is why he actually needed the 3 lockers. About CC TBH, I almost never use it and usually only lock the diff and modulate throttle with my 200 because the V8 is so good for that.

Starting at 26:00 you can see what I've been saying in here about CC and why it's no substitute for a locker.

I realize Ben did not turn on CC specifically, but TRAC/ATRAC/MTS works the same when you press the accelerator. Depending on what mode you're in, varies the amount of wheel spin allowed before the system engages. Nonetheless, the system digs holes while figuring out what to do. It thinks. It takes time. It maybe...eventually...kinda sorta gets you up over stuff. I like it for what it is, and if you don't have lockers, it will get the job done. It's not pretty, even on the new 300.

It's not hard to imagine a scenario where you're overlanding (maybe even pulling a trailer) and suddenly you end up in a situation like Ben puts all 3 rigs in. Triple locked is a game changer compared to CC. It might make the difference between stacking rocks, pulling out traction boards, or even pulling a hi-lift

Ok well let me correct my previous statement, CC can’t ever be superior since a triple locked OT would also have CC.

LS vs locker; different subject.

I’d rather have an electric front locker than air, perhaps there is an aftermarket e-locker?
Harrop has a front E-locker listed. Check with Eaton and maybe they have one available Stateside already.

Front 3.31 differential w/ locker should be

41110-60E10

The CV shafts are different

43420-60240 LH
43410-60180 RH

Rear 3.31 differential w/ locker

41110-60D70

Gasket for diff to housing

42181-60190

Here’s an older post lightly discussing swapping the 4.30 ratio locking diffs.

I'm with Greg on this, I have rigs that are tripple locked, rigs with CC and A-TRAC, it's not even close, Lockers give you so much more control over obstacles, you need less tire spin going through obstacles(but can have it when you want it) etc... It's really night and day in my opinion! Just my 2 cents after beating on LC's for over 30 years 🤪 A classic version of an "Overtrail" HAH

I'm gonna admit, I'm a noob about this. So does having a triple lockers, combined with CC provides more capability or at some point it becomes diminishing return?

Different tools for different situations. Fully locked generally means maximum traction.
