Needs the t belt and water pump service

Questions:
1) are you guys buying parts and taking it to the shop or dealer? If so which kits are you buying ?

2) what should labor charge be ?

The 4.7 tundra and the 4.7 sequoia is the same motor and trans as the LX correct ?

The change from 4 speed to 5 speed transmission occurred in different years for the Tundra and Sequioa and maybe for different models. Some of the external parts (serpentine belt for one) can be different. When ordering parts use the year and model of your LX to be sure.

The parts shown in that kit should work for all pre-VVTi (and maybe VVTi too?). I've used the same 'kit' I created for both a 2000 and 2004. There are a few minor hoses up by the throttle body that are different but that only applies if you take the 'while we're in there' approach and replace everything that is rubber or rotates. A basic timing job (water pump, belt, idlers, etc as shown in the link above) are all the same parts.

That said, I'd buy Toyota parts from one of our sponsors here. My time is worth too much to risk doing a job twice because I wanted to save $50 on parts.

Amen.

I get an awesome family discount at my local dealership. I recently went in to ask about a timing belt/water pump kit and prices. Toyota does not have a "kit." All parts sold separately. Even with my discount all parts totaled about $500+. I'm def going the Amazon/Evergreen kit route.

I suggest you replace the fan bracket while you are in there.... I have ordered the cheapest kit off ebay and received good name brand parts in the kit... all parts fail... even good name brand new parts... but I am of the school... "while you are in there" if it rotates it gets replaced...

I haven't had to do my service yet but I started searching already and found parts on amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Evergreen-TBK298MHWPA-98-07-Toyota-Timing/dp/B00NAK9F3K/ref=pd_sim_sbs_263_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=51alm0kGyWL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=84PM48V3D1R02J9H3TYV

There's other kits available and from what I searched previous a timing belt and water pump job was around 1200
Thank you. So that is $214 for parts, what should be expected labor cost?

I will see if I can figure out the sponsor page. Thank you

+1 on the fan bracket. Also, the fan clutch is must likely really tired too. Radiator fittings start to get brittle at that age/mileage as well. Oil cooler hoses are staring at you too. It's all apart, might as well do it all the way, you'll be back in there soon ...

I have a question- looks like my rig had its timing belt changed at +60000 but no mention of the water pump per Lexus.com history. How long would the water pump last? Would you change everything again to stay at normal intervals?

My understanding is to replace water pump, you need to get the TB off, and you might as well replace the TB. If it is not leaking, I would not replace it. Just for comparison sake, mine has 214K miles, I am the third owner, and 99% sure the WP is original (no record that WP was replaced when they replaced TB). I will replace WP on the next TB replacement.

I've asked my local Dealer parts guy how long our WP last. He said he's heard of over 200K miles and still going, as @bctlex. He's also seen brand new ASIN fail in 20K miles. I've 165k on my LC without issue, and my LX was done at 185K just because 1st T-belt was being done. There is no "normal interval" for water pump, but most do with T-belt as it's cost effective.

I baby my water pump by flushing with 50/50 Toyota red & demineralized water every 30K or 2 years, per owners manual.

If it's not broken don't fix it!

I'm relatively new to the site and would like to support the group. Can you direct me to the sponsors you mentioned.

Has anyone here suffered a broken fan bracket, if so, what were the signs it was failing?

Fwiw we (Cruiser Outfitters) stock the AISIN kits and needed Seals, 100% Japanese (OEM supplier) parts. We stock the AISIN fan bracket too!

I had 205k on my original water pump, but timing belt was done around 100k. If you are paying a reputable local shop to do the timing belt and water pump, I would use their recommended parts, or have them get Toyota or aisin parts if that is what you want. I wouldn't take your own parts in to save a few bucks, but that is just me. The shop I used last week, to do my timing belt in a 99, put in a continental timing belt kit. They also did the water pump while they were in there. They charged for 6 hours labor. I could have gotten the parts cheaper than they do, but they said if the timing belt or water pump break in 90k miles then continental will pay them to fix my car. If I bring in my own parts there is no warranty. They mentioned Napa doing the same (if a Napa part breaks under warranty then I will not be out any money, Napa and the shop will take care of it).
The vendors and shops that are active on Mud are great, and I would purchase from them if you are doing the work yourself.

Currently getting the TB and water pump at Toyota. Labor quoted was $519. Not too bad. They hit me up for new radiator hoses which was only $65. One thing they said I should replace is the oil cooler line. They didn't have any in stock. Anyone have experience with this leaking?
