Hey all,

Most of us around here agree that the center console in the LX450 is less than optimal (to put it nicely). This is due in part to the large, mediocre sub-woofer and the CD changer that dwell beneath it.

Once installing an aftermarket stereo the disc changer becomes obsolete. Actually worse than obsolete; it's unusable. Another thing that happens when people install a new HU is they opt to bypass the factory amp as well as the factory sub-woofer. The reason for this is that the center sub is small and doesn't offer much in terms of bass. You're better off just replacing the door speakers with something with a little more kick.

That potentially means that you're missing out on all of that space shown in the picture above. By removing the CD changer and the sub-woofer you could more than double your center console space. However, it's not enough to remove them and have a gaping hole full of junk. It would be best to have an organized storage solution for all this extra space.

This is why I'm creating this thread. My questions and or challenge to you all are this: Has anyone done this before? Have you seen any solutions of other IH8MUD members or other cruisers? Do you have any ideas for creating a secondary console where the CD changer and sub-woofer once were?

More so than anything I would want it to look clean. My initial thought was to remove the CD changer and sub-woofer. Then place some sort of pop-up door or sliding door where the sub-woofer screen is. That would be the entry point. Then possibly do the same where the CD changer was for another point of access. It would also not be a bad idea to have a 2-part compartment; 1 where the CD changer is and 1 where the sub-woofer is so that things aren't too difficult to access.

Sliding door:

I hope this is something that other owners have been thinking and maybe we can find a practical solution without resorting to aftermarket center consoles!

Check this out for how to remove the center console:

I cut out the grill and sub and have been using the sub enclosure as extra storage. The idea at the time was to fab something up to better use the space, maybe even cup holders ... that was 4 years ago.... as for the CD changer, perfect spot for an inverter.

Kinda perfect for ham/cb external speaker.

true, but that wastes a lot of space. I wired my ham and cb external speaker into the factory dash speakers. Just cut out the resistor for more output, disconnect from the stereo, and connect the new wires. Plenty loud and clear enough. I have HAM going to the driver side and CB going to the passenger so I can distinguish between the two.

As a 6 year member of this forum you should be using the search function. You will find many posts on the subject.

Inverter is a good idea for the CD changer slot. Don't know how I feel about the hole in the center console, but I suppose it's more useful than the sub!

I pulled the sub with grand plans and eventually just left the sub box and put some foam in it. Now it's a hole that things get thrown in. The CD changer is the perfect size for a sidearm or a roll of duct tape. It's on my list of things to make look good someday which means it will probably sit the way it is for 10+ years.

I have always intended to remove the grill, and fab a plastic (Kydex?) insert to hold 6 carling switches. Maybe a bad idea for inadvertent switching on? I have recently revisited the solid state switch solution ( Spod, and some others) and will more than likely go that way and put in a tuffy box in the console's place.

I liked how the lx console was high enough for my elbow rest. I removed the changer and sub box. Made room for cb install in changer spot. Install of my Asus tinkerboard with ups. And switches for heated seats. Any port on the back of the Alpine is extended to the console . The grill will get removed eventually and something put there but the extra space there is nice for future mods. The top lid i ran a USB cable and also ran power from the CD changer plug to run a fan to keep my phone cool.

I have a wireless charging pad that will go somewhere to keep my work phone charged without adding more cables. All that and there will be lots of more room for other stuff.

@Outsane i have the same fridge and was planning something in the same neighborhood. The fan is loud though, are you going to replace it with a computer case fan that is a little nicer? I looked up what i could on the fan but the cfm information i couldn't find.

I'll modify the base to host Dometic CF11 fridge on it and a ham radio (with external display) where the changer is.
I wish someone made such a mount but I was unable to find a good mount that suites my needs.

Something like this? CF11 mounts to it too.
