I just got home from a lovely two mile walk through the sleet after the 80 left me on a side street. Everything was going fine until I started to pull up a hill and it started sputtering, as I pulled onto a side street it stalled completely. I sat there a minute and then restarted it and then noticed smoke or steam coming from the hood. By the time I got out an d the hood open I couldn't tell where it was coming from and I couldn't really smell anything. After starting it and watching it at idle and not seeing anything I got in and started back up the hill where it started sputtering on it's way to a stall.

Upshot is that it will start and idle and drive at low RPM with no issue, but once I hit 1800 it starts to sputter and die.

All vitals seem to be in order;
temp gauge normal
oil pressure at the 1/4 mark at idle
battery charge fine
half tank of gas
97 w/ ~119K

The only thing I've noticed prior to this is a valve clatter right at 1800RPM that goes away if I get above or below that. No engine work has been done recently other than and oil change last week.
It's currently being loaded to go on it's way to the dealer for a diagnostic, so I 'll see what they say.

Any check engine lights?

Hope it's not your head gasket.

Check your plug wires or your plugs.
Before I sold my '94 LC it sat in front of my house for a couple weeks without being started. Seem to recall similar symtoms.

Turned out the engine was running on 4 cylinders.

s*** i have same year with same miles. luckily no problems (x-ing fingers).

Try to rev in neutral above the 1800 rpm where it cuts out. Also see how it drives in reverse. It sounds like you may have the cracked wire problem behind the engine. Whenever the engine torques in drive, it aggravates the problem. See if that's it. Hopefully so.

As a follow up - make sure the dealer tries this first. Otherwise, they will try to throw some expensive parts at it (like and ECU). Ask me how I know. :D

After we dropped it off at the dealership it let out a large backfire and then wouldn't start back up.

Just got off the phone with my service guy and he says that the wires are so detiorated that any bit of moisture on them shorts them out. Which makes sense as the problem started as the truck was melting ice and snow off. I had put Bosch plugs and wires on the truck about a year ago, before I heard they could be a problem, but I didn't think they could go bad this quickly.

I'll probably replace the wires, etc. myself, should I also get a new toyo cap and rotor?

I also just realized I'll have to get a non running truck back to my house from the dealer

Why not just install the wires, etc. yourself in the dealer lot?

I agree with Alaskacruiser -- why not just install new wires (or have the guys in the shop do it) then do the rest of the work at home?

Yes. Use OEM ignition parts if you don't use them anywhere else. Quite a few people have found that the non-Toyota wires do not work well. The fit and quality is a real problem.

Maybe you should let the dealer replace the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs and hopefully that will get it running good again. The symptoms you described sounded more serious than just some bad wires.
