Damn...I am so pissed off. Another lesson learned. I took my new-to-me 93 LC with 97k miles on it to Jiffy Lube to get the oil changed...while there I decided to go ahead and get the diff and transfer case fluids changed out to M1 gear oil. Three thousand miles later and with a loud whine up front I decided to call the local land cruiser mechanics, LCS Offroad, to see what the whine was. The first thing they said was to check the transfer case to see if there was Dextron instead of gear oil..and sure enough, the freaking transfer case was runnining on Dex. Ughhh...The Jiffy Lube manager said they will take care of it, but we will see if they come through. The whine is like a WWII dive bomber...This is what I get for being lazy and not having any freaking time.

Ok..here's the tech question...how much would it be to rebuild the transfer case. What would need replacing? Only bearings or gears, too?

Did this happen to you to? Was going to order the Birf rebuild parts from Dan b/c of the whine. I thought my bearings were going out, but it's the transfer case.

Depends if the gears are alright or not. If you have to replace the gears it'll be expensive thats what they told me at the shop. Or if you even can..

Rule of thumb never go to jiffy lube. Dad took my cruiser down there one day and the took out everything they could to try and sell to him, air filter, hoses, bunch of crap taht was brand new they were trying to sell. In taking the filter out and in the hose to the EFI was cut, or slit and fawked the cruiser. That was the one down on bee caves.

Jiffy Lube,

The last time I was there, they FORGOT to put the oil filter on the engine. Yes FORGOT, what a bunch of Dumb as.... I have a mechanic that works on my 4-Runner and he does everything, including changing tires, oil, electrical, everything. No one is to touch my truck but him.
It took me a long time, but I have a GREAT Mechanic, find one if you don't have time to do your stuff. I don't have the time or expertise to do most items.

Yeah the PO of my cruiser got a new engine from Toyota, Jlube left out the plug!
Oh well saved me the hasle of having my engine rebuilt.

So, ah...what did the manager say happened to the expensive Mobil 1 gear oils you dropped off with the rig??

Also, I wouldn't accept a center diff rebuilt locally - request a factory rebuilt unit.

PS - what's in your other diffs, and your tranny, and did they top off your coolant with the green stuff?

they put the wrong oil filter on a friends POS and they only gave him blue book or about $400, he still doseny hava car

davegonz- I would definitely complain LOUDLY about the poor service and possible damage caused by Jiffy Lube. Believe me, they do this kind of thing often. They may try to fight it initially, but if you can take it to a competent mechanic and get them to verify that damage has occurred, you should be able to get Jiffy Lube to foot the bill, as they should. Do not pay for this yourself until you follow this route. Just my .02.

Luckily no, my problem was that the seals from transfer case were gone but they weren't. LCS told me to look at the fluid a week after I had them check out the truck and everything is fine. But he told me the price is 200 plus the labor I THINK if I remember correctly 5 hrs. And he said that was if the gears were still good.

What you better get is a NEW TRANSFERCASE from the bastards.

Tell them that is what it is going to take to make you go away.

Really? Just all new, eh? Man, it's gotta be close to $4,000 eh? Ouch!

Yeah, Jiffy Lube, I just don't know where to start but I will tell you this, stay away from any lube service shop. They are all the same. Even when it's snowing, I do my own oil, tcase, tranny fluid change. Both my and wife's truck. Neighbors think I am crazy and shake their heads but I simply let them do that.

EDIT: Ah what the hell, I will share my odd ball story with you guys. I took my Xterra (RIP) to Jiffy lube couple years ago. They stripped my oil cap and oil nozzle threads, I did not realize this months later. So I was using crap like rubber band, wire etc to hold down the plastic cap to the nozzle. Last month when I rolled my truck, it kinda worked on my favor. All the oil came off through the oil nozzle as the truck was up side down, no oil got into the piston. We checked the spark plugs after we got the truck upright on its wheels, they were dry. I crank the ignition and WHALLA!! The truck started back up! I drove home for 3 hours with busted winshield and sunroof. Anyway, as of today I thank Jiffy Lube for stripping my oil cap and nozzle :D

Raid - you crack me up. That has to be the most F%$@ed up story I have ever heard in PRAISE of Jiffy Lube. BTW, glad to hear you rolled a Nissan and not a Toyota.

Follow this mans advice ASAP. :grinpimp:

The manager at the shop wanted me to drive it around for a day or two with the new GL5 gear oil in it to see if the whine lessens. I don't think it will. I did drop it off at LCS Offroad for them to check it out to see if the whine is 100% coming from the transfer case.

Hey Dave,
Which shop in Austin? All the Austin crew should just show up, you know...for moral support. :) :)

PM me off line - I just had my transfer case rebuilt locally, Edwin did it for me, we found the wrong oil in the case, from the PO...(I wondering if she went to the same lube place???)

-Mark
