...the oil isn't low. I assume it's a low oil light anyway, but I can't get it to come on to get a good look at it- is there a procedure to get all the dash lights to illuminate? Most cars will do it when you first turn on the ignition, as a light bulb test.

Anyway, wife's '95 LC, ~100K, no mods, no other issues. My wife had mentioned that a light came on a few weeks ago, but hasn't seen it since. I drove it tonight about 12 miles one way, and on the return trip about halfway home this light- looks like a genie lamp with water waves, I'm assuming it's a low oil level light- came on steady for about 30 seconds. I had been driving at a steady speed of 40 MPH for at least a mile in a straight line, so it wasn't at a weird angle or under acceleration or braking. I immediately checked the oil pressure guage, which was normal for this truck at the 2/3 mark. This truck has better indicated oil pressure than most others I've seen. The light went out on it's own, again without any turning or speed changes. It did the same thing about 5 minutes later under similar conditions. Same good oil pressure reading. I proceeded home- another 10 minute drive- with no repeats. I almost went out to the shop to grab some oil, but figured I'd check it first to find out just how low it was. It wasn't. The oil level was higher than halfway up the hashed area, pretty much exactly where I fill it to when I change the oil (9 qts w/ new filter). I was baffled, so I checked it again- same results- so I checked it two more times, tossed the towel in the trash, almost closed the hood, and then grabbed another towel and checked it again. It's most definitely not low.

So what gives? I don't have an FSM (shame on me, yeah yeah). I know that the alternator and brake dash lights can come on in odd combinations to indicate a specific problem. Is there a secondary meaning in that genie lamp? The light came on solid with no flickering, like it meant business, and went out the same way. No CEL light, no other issues at all. I am getting near my 3,000 mile oil interval, but I can't imagine that means anything. Would there happen to be an oil temperature sensor? I thought there might have been a verticle stick in the middle of the waves on the indicator that might have been a thermometer, but as I said I can't get the light to come on in a test mode to get a good look at it. The unmodified temp guage was normal, at a hair under half.

Oh, and I did a search. :flipoff2: One thread suggested that the sensor was bad, but his light was on all the time. Mine might be taking a crap, but I want to make sure there isn't some hidden meaning behind that light. I can't believe that it would read a low oil condition with that much oil on the dipstick- I've had my other truck at some pretty severe angles for a good amount of time, never seen that light even flicker.

If its not reading full on the dipstick, I'd just toss another qt in and see if that takes care of it.

Ive had my light come on, and it seemed near full on the dipstick, but apparently near full was just low enough to have the light come on intermittantly.

9 qts?

There's a few threads out there that pointed to an over sensitive sensor that came on intermittently.

Mine does exactly the same thing about 3 to 5 minutes after start up, driving at 50 mph in a straight line. It goes on for 5 to 20 seconds and not show up again all day. The level on the dipstick is at mid level or below. When I add some oil to bring it back up to the top, the light will not act up again for the next 1000 miles (i.e. after some oil gets used up). Seems to be a very sensitive warning light.

Mine does the same when it's getting close to time for an oil change. Usually only when the truck is cold too. I've been surprised at how sensitive it is. It will come on if I brake hard if I get a quart low (oil goes to the front of the pan, sensor's at the back).

I've got the same thing when cold.

Mine acts up when warm and a tad low. It doesn't come on when cold...only when warm, not hot. If I add oil it will not come on any more. I think it is sensitive and effective.

Okey-dokey, maybe it's a touch low and touchy. I'll change the oil, make a note of exactly what the dipstick reads with 9 quarts in there (yes, 9, it never reads over-full, what can I say? I doubt that it would matter if it were a pint over anyway) and keep an eye on it. Thanks!

I'd say if there's no pattern you can see, then I'd check the plug on the sensor. My wires pulled out of the plug when I removed it to change out the rear knock sensor.

After 10+ years, they're really brittle, and you may have intermittant contact. I stuck them back in, and it's been fine since, but I'll end up soldering them back in when I have the desire to later.

How do you get 9qts of oil in and still read low on the dip stick?

Luckily for us this was just added to the FAQs :) (inside joke)

Engine oil
Dry fill 8.0 liters (8.5 US qts, 7.0 Imp. qts)
Drain and refill w/ Oil filter change 7.4 liters (7.8 US qts, 6.5 Imp. qts)
w/o Oil filter change 6.9 liters (7.3 US qts, 6.1 Imp qts)

Romer posted these #s up so I assume they are from his '97 LX FSM. Is this another slight difference between earlier 80s/LXs and later model years that the earlier year models hold even more oil?

I never said it read low on the stick after an oil change, I said it didn't read high. With a sump that large, a pint more or less isn't going to raise or lower the stick reading much, as it's a fairly small percentage of the total volume. On a 4 quart sump, the difference would be obvious.

9 quarts is what I filled my first 80 to before I knew to check a forum to find the proper capacity. I got to that number by adding quart after quart until the dipstick measured full. Imagine my suprise after the 5th or 6th quart- I had no idea the 80 had such a large capacity. I was pretty nervous by the 7th quart, checking to make sure the dipstick was actually going into the oil pan and not just hanging out the bottom of the engine. :D I think that's about the point I saw a drop of oil on the end of the stick, so I kept adding until it was full. I think that was the day I decided to do my research on 'Mud before starting any task on my truck, no matter how simple it seemed. That's been a good strategy for me ever since.

I've always dumped 8qts in there then close the hood - not even bothered to read the dipstick.

Though I occasionally add .5 a quart during the oil intervals before long trips if it's a little low, I've never seen the stick reads below 1/3 of the full mark.

My light is coming on all the time now. I put more oil in it and the dipstick reads beyond full now. I just got an oil change a month ago, so I'm not sure what is going on. I think I need a new sensor.

So in your search you found this thread, right? https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=24818

usually 8-8.25 quarts for me on a standard change, never less than 8. Stays right at the full mark, but occasionally when at idle the low oil light will flash, but I tap on the gas and it goes away.

There were so many threads returned on my search that I skimmed the titles and read the later ones. Thanks for that link, and what's your follow up? Did you end up bending it? I'd like to avoid that, but curious if you did it, and either way if your sensor was still overly sensitive.

-Spike

Yes I bent it a little and it didn't seem to make much of a difference, I still get the occasional flicker of the light while waiting at a light or something, has only happened a half dozen times since that thread so I've quit worrying about it.
