Looking to install some hood louvers on my '91. Would love to go with a set of Grand Prix ones but I'm not looking to spend what most people are asking for a set. I saw someone mentioned these Jeep Hood Louvers | Offroad Jeep Parts – GenRight in a previous post and was just curious if anyone has installed them on their 80. Thanks.

Go buy a Jeep and sell your FJ80 :flipoff2:, Ok now some serious stuff, why do you want/need louvers, are you going to hang out at the drive in and want to impress the girls :worms:

Everyone who has installed hood louvers reports considerable improvement in control of water temps. We like to open up the exhaust side of the engine (air pump) so why not open up the exhaust side of the radiator cooling fan?

It makes sense to me. The more quickly hot air is exhausted from the engine bay the quicker cool air can be drawn across the radiator.

Recently a member posted up pics and commentary on his Poison Spider Jeep louver panel install.

Rip panels off and put the radiator up high, sand rail style.

I am strongly leaning toward a single louver over the exhaust side of the engine, that way ZFG about water dripping inside the engine compartment. After a hard climb or day on the trails, you cant touch the hood or fenders...tells me there is far too much heat that can't get out from under the hood.

The PO put in louvers on my rig, and yes water does get in, but it does let heat out rapidly so try it, whats a little water/

I've done a several hood vent installs including the first of the GTP hood vents on an 80 series and to this day I haven't seen any issues with water leaking in. With that said, the water doesn't leak on the valve cover/spark plugs/distributor or any areas that are of concern. Very simple, they help lower temps in the engine bay.

Right on. The goal is to keep things a bit cooler, particularly on long, steep climbs. It just seems like the heat that the 3fe and auto trans put out has no place to go.

If your engine/water temps are rising, your best bang for the buck is changing the fan clutch with 15K CST fluid and adding an electric pusher fan on the passenger side of the condenser. The vents help with engine bay temps, but the two items listed above really work for keeping coolant temps steady. The pusher is really only needed when climbing very slow or idling with the AC on.

Water temps are controlled by the cool system but vents are a good idea for IAT and just making hoses and wiring last longer. After 30 minutes of driving my IAT is around 150, not the best for performance and since these things are slow anyway, need all the help they can get.

That being said I've been looking for alternatives to cutting the hood but it is an effective way to drop underhood temps. And it would be easy to make a drip pan right under the vent to direct where you want the water to go to keep it off belts and whatever. Also thinking about a heat shield or somehow separate the intake box from the rest of the engine.

I have used louvers from this guy in the past, quality stuff. These are weld in louvers.

I have also purchased louvers from Rod's. Stand up guy. Order by phone and he will get you whatever you need if it's not offered on the website. After cruising ebay and amazon and finding tons of plastic/fiberglass junk for twice as much, these louvers are really well priced. You can rivet them onto the hood, tack/seam seal and bondo, or if you're feeling ambitious, weld them in place like they were there from the start. :smokin:

The louvers help evacuate air from the engine bay, relieving a high-pressure area and increasing airflow through the radiator. They actually do help your radiator work better, not just for IAT. :)

My louvers were also purchased from Rod's via Ebay. Great product! I had them powder coated before install.

I ran them for two years... got a new (used) hood this year...
Engine was full of dust n grime....

No thanks...

Thanks for the pics. That 80 is awesome man. Looks like I will be getting a set of louvers from Rod's. BTW where did you get your electric fan?
