I'm not talking about the ones that point up at the windshield, but the ones mounted on the dash itself meant to defrost the door windows. I've sourced a 74 tub that I'm putting on my 78 frame. My 78 has these vents, the 74 doesn't. Not sure how I feel about the look of them, I think I may like the less cluttered look. I'm in Utah, so they'd probably come in handy, but this is not a daily driver, not sure how much I'll be using it in the winter (more of a summer cruiser). Any thoughts or opinions from you guys? Leave the dash uncut and leave them off, or go ahead and drill the holes and tap the screw hole on the 74 dash? Anything I'm missing if I decide to leave them off? I'd guess need to plug the holes on the ducts or buy new ducts without the holes that channel to the side vents?

My 79 doesn't have them. I don't drive it much in the winter either. I can't imagine they are very effective. I'm of the mind that less cutting is better.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I figure I can always drill down the road if I decide I really want them. A lot easier to add them later than to plug them up and repaint. Thanks for chiming in.

leave the dash uncut,
the side defrosters don't seem to work as well as I think they should
you lose a lot of air flow thru the small tube to get to the outlet

i bought these vents for my 1979 15 years ago, still have not installed them. Probably won't since I have a full cage roll bar and it's tight right there.

My 1982 has them, I think they help some, but even my 80 doesn't do a great job of keeping the side windows clear. I think that's one of the joys of driving an old landcruiser - especially a 40 😂 . How's your project coming?

The only thing I’d miss about mine is when someone gets in my truck for the first time and asks “what the h### is this thing sticking out of your dash?”

You will like the vintage air defrost. Blows strong across the windshield, and the AC comes on when switched to defrost to dry the air a bit before it discharges against the glass. I also reinstalled my rear heater, using the original cable heat control valve and pull switches. I installed the supply ‘tee’ for the rear heater just downstream of the Vintage air electronic heat control valve, then through the original cable control valve to the rear heater….all works pretty slick in the coldest, dampest weather…..As for side windows, as I stated above, crack the vent widow, keep a Bar Towel handy….moves just enough air to keep the drivers side window clean and the drivers side rear view mirror useable.

In the summer, you will find the vintage air works the best on 80 degree days. However, on 95 to 100 degree days, I find myself with the window down enjoying the warm breeze up my teeshirt sleeve… with AC keeping my kneecaps and ‘man parts’ nice and cool…..won’t freeze you out, but cools just enough to say…ahhhhhh. 😎
