I found a '74 piggy in my local paper for 400 bucks. Its rusty but seems to be mostly complete, its missing the emblems and tach but everything else is there. I havent seen it in person yet but i had a long conversation with the seller, seemed like a good guy. He said he rebuilt the motor (dont know what that means to him) and it has very few miles on it, but it needs new seals/gaskets because its been sitting so long. Says it runs but his holley leaks gas and needs a rebuild. It will need to be towed away because the slave is frozen, he thinks some water got down in it. He says everything in the drivetrain is solid and complete, aka it ran fine in 4wd last time he drove it years back. Here are some pictures for you guys to peruse. Im a college kid so i dont have much money but im thinking about asking if hell go down to 250-300 since its not moving right now and has cancer. What do you guys think?

I would take off at least $50 for the strange hood ornament. doesnt look bad, although its got some rust... Getting it running should not be too hard, as long as the engine rotates...

Yeah, i gotta get a few finances in order and arrange to pick it up and i think im gonna grab it. It may run, he just said the idle screw leaks or something like that and since the slave is shot you cant drive it. The owner seemed to think it was worse than i do, which is good. Its worth the money for the drivetrain alone as far as im concerned.

Are there any places i should check for rust in particular? Any deal breaker type places?

-Matt

Matt,

Typical rust places on pigs are: the lower front fenders, rockers, drip rail, front floor boards (particularly where the body mounts to the frame), rear quarters below the reverse lights, and the rear sil.

These places alone arnt really deal breakers, but combined they can be. It all depends on how much work you as an individual are willing to put into it. From what I can tell from your pictures, my pig has about the same ammount of rust and I paid $1100 for it. Granted mine "ran". But rust is easy to cut out and replace with good metal. So I say offer him $200 and work from there.

Less rust than I started with. I only spent $1 though. I'd say get it. Maybe try to offer a little less and see if he'll take it and if not just drop the full amount.
