LOKKA Part -Time Kit

Spent some time on the highway confirming this is the way I want to go. Without the spool installed in the tcase I can easily switch back and forth between 2wd and all wheel drive hub equipped. Both the wife and I like 2wd much better on the highway and dirt forest road. Steering is lighter easier to drive with less steering input and no torque steer. We have one trip to Mexico coming up in a week and will do the transfer case spool install when we return.

Note: If my plan was to wheel my LX470 hard I would be scared of AVM hubs even the HD version I purchased. They are in no way an Aisin Hub equivalent.
So are you basically running the kit Slee sells now? Sounds like an interesting option.

So this will allow part time and the ability for a rear auto locker?

I have been looking at auto lockers but my understanding is that since we are full time 4wd that's not possible. In would love a rear auto locker.

Why?

The cost of ARB and it doesn't even include the Compressor. I like the simplicity of the auto locker. My only experience with an auto locker is what i have read and youtube vids.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a rear auto locker doesn't work in any scenario since the rear has power in awd or rwd, thus it would always be locked. A part time kit would allow you to use a front auto locker though.

I guess the idea is that you wouldn't be on the throttle when making sharp turns so the rear would unlock, but I wasnt even considering that an option since nobody ever has a good experience lunchbox locking a rear drive axle and trying to daily drive. If it's an off-road only, then yeah, that makes more sense.

I agree with all that minus the lunch box locker. How is a lunchbox locker in the rear only activated when in 4wd and not locked in 2wd when on the street?

Lunch box activates when needed, at low speeds/turning it ratchets.

It actually activates anytime there's torque applied. So when throttling through a sharp on or off road, its locked. It will only ratchet when coasting.

Not completely true. Whether you are on or off the throttle the rear will unlock if the wheel differential is different and can overcome the pressure the pin/springs put on the locker plates. It's if you apply gas while making a turn it will ratchet but it's still unlocked. I had an Aussie rear in my 80 and it worked fine for off and onroad.

@LandCruiserPhil did you ever get the Lokka Part Time TC kit? Any idea if these would work with the Trail-Gear or Marlin Transfer case reduction gears?

I have only installed the hubs so far on the LX470 but I can answer your question because my 80 is part time along with Marlins low gears.

Do you already have the Lokka kit? They have multiple kits, mainly I'm interested in why there is a price difference in the two conversion kits, or are both of them needed?

I'm pretty sure the first one is the locker, the second is the part-time with hi performance hubs, the third is the part time with normal hubs and the fourth is the part time kit with no hubs.

Duh, I should have read clearly. Thanks for the clarification. I think I will be embarking down this path unless I hear otherwise. Going with the kit with no hubs as I am running 80 series axles and will probably purchase Aisin's from Cruiser Outfitters

I went with the kit that included the Hi-performance hubs and had fitment issues. I was not impressed with the quality of the hi-performance hubs but I have an 80 series for real wheeling. I wish there was an Aisin option. If you plan to do low gears the time to do it is with the part time kit. Be warned there is a good amount of press work with the low gears only 1 bearing needed pressing with the part time kit.

@duggy your trans, transfer case, and axle set up would be the same as an 80 series. I also went (recommended) with Aisin hubs on my 80 series. You will need to cut a new axle groove for the Aisin hubs unless you upgraded the birf already.

Perfect, thanks for the info. I do have a press at home and a bearing splitter.

You will need a large bearing spliter for the spool bearing. If you dont have one a new bearing (~$40) is less than a large bearing spliter.
