LJ78 Big Fan Upgrade #2

Yes I have a egt gauge installed already. Under load it can get up to 1250 or so. I back off immediately to around 1000.

All I can say is this. Mine was behaving pretty much like you describe. Once I flushed the cooling system twice and installed the Tridon tstat my temps were much better. They would still creep up a bit but never break about 200F under load . Then once I did the fan clutch with a higher viscosity fluid, I was seeing around 198F under the same conditions. Since I have installed the intercooler, I have never seen over 196F.
The issue with these trucks is it's a rabbit hole you have to go down and each little tweak makes it a bit better.

Next spring I may upgrade the radiator. But, for now my temps are under control.

That’s fantastic to know! Like I said, the egr is already deleted, has evens coolant, rebuilt the fan clutch with 15,00 cst. Have egt and boost gauge hooked up. Waiting to do the thermostat so while housing is off I’ll tap it for aftermarket water temp sender. Installed oil catch for intake. Really hoping the trident thermostat will get me to where I don’t have to worry about temps like I am now. Egt’s I’ll deal with down the road with 2.5 exhaust. Way down the road I’d like to do the water to air I tercooker, but not on the top of he list. Just trying to get it reliable so I can put some money into a lift kit because the factory suspension is done.

Sounds like a great plan. You can also turn the boost up a bit and that will drop the EGT's . I ran about 13psi prior to doing my intercooler. No more fuel, just gave it a few psi of boost. That really helped the EGT's.
I am running just shy of 18PSI now since I intercooled and turned the fuel up. I am running btween 750-950F on the freeway at 70-75mph. Long enough hill I see 1000F.

What suspension are you thinking?

So I just put a new stock turbo on it and it seems like it’s boosting to around 13psi. Previous owner said he’s messed with the fuel some. I’m not looking for power right now, just trying to keep it cool. It sucks having to shut the ac off and float the pedal to keep it from getting in the red. Would love it if I never got above 210. I’ve been looking at the 60-65mm Dobinson kit. Looks really nice. I know I’ll have to do adjustable Panhard rods as well as longer brake lines. Found full set of adjustable Panhard rods on amazon and eBay for $250. Seems pretty good. Want to run 33’s with a bit of travel.

Start yourself a thread. We would love to see what you are doing. And, we are clogging up Nick's fan thread here. I know he doesn't care, but still.

The Dobinsons 65MM is what I am running with 33" tires. It's a really good suspension. I have had a lot of OME coils, and find the Dobinsons to be a nicer suspension. Several of us are running it. Nick just swapped his front OME to the Dobinsons. He is really happy as well.

Is this fan upgrade a go for the 3L engine as well? I am assuming the 2L and 3L fan are the same 7 blades from the factory. Anyone came with the correct part number for the 17.5 fan blades. I am still seeing the cheap one on eBay and just want to confirm. Malteser also has a 3L, hoping he can report on the improvement from his fan upgrade.

Hey there quietmission! Yes correct, my factory 3L had the same 7 blade fan but slightly different shroud (as shown above). When I installed the fan I also set my clutch to engage earlier so I can't really comment on the effect it had on its own, but since this upgrade I have never hit 100C again.

So I'm buying a new Aisin clutch and wondering what viscosity CST oil I need to get. Values seem to be all over the place in MUD. Watcha all think? Also how much do I need to purchase?

Ordering fan today. New high flow thermostat has been delivered.
She just doesn’t like climbing Colorado hills!

We definitely need to figure out what Toyota part number is for the 17.5" fan with swept blades. I'll look into it again and see if I can come up with anything.

Let me dig into this. I just had a customer refer me to this thread asking if we have the 16361-17010 or better yet a bigger blade that doesn't need any trimming. We stock ~30 different AISIN, OEM Toyota & Aftermarket blades and 30+ AISIN & OEM Toyota Fan Blades, I've got to imagine we have a bolt on combo available. As I see it we simply need to match the fan clutch pattern (or change the fan clutch too) and the overall offset/height of the fan all while getting in the 17.5" range. I have some fans in my comptuer FAN61020xxx variants that have a 17.75" OD. Ideally it would have the same high-flow blade type of the 16361-17010 (our part# FANB17010 if anyone wants an AISIN Japanese blade) which we show as an 18" as well. We have both AISIN and OEM here and they are identical @ 18"
Perhaps time for a thread like this on pump/clutch/fan options? Fan Blade & Clutch Tech for BJ7x with 3B/13BT (A440F & H55F Models)

Has anyone figured out if the LJ79 Shroud aligns with the bolts on the LJ78 without mods? Thanks

Yes it does, but it sits a little short at the bottom. The LJ79 radiator is about an inch shorter than the LJ78. I recently put an LJ78 aluminium rad on my LJ79 and it works well.

Okay, thanks. So are you saying if I have an LJ78 and keep my radiator, that by installing an LJ79 shroud, the bolts will align and it will be sturdy? Just want to double check before i spend the money :-)
