Alrighty then, So I installed the HZJ7X fan on the lj78 clutch hub. It DOES contact the OEM fan shroud just ever so slightly at the top of the shroud where it slopes toward the front of the vehicle. So, as Nick supposed, some modification will be required. I have to say, that is a whole lot more fan than Original Equipment.
Will you modify the fan or the shroud? I'll be getting mine in a week or so, and I thought I might sand off the fan tip ends. Any thoughts?

Jim. I trimmed the fan tips a little bit. Concerned with balance, I made a template to mark and cut each one the same. Is it enough? Not sure yet. I need to finish my snorkel before I run the fan. If it does make contact when it kicks in, I will mod the shroud and not mess with the fan anymore. I didn’t take much off the tips. I’ll see if I can find one of the tips and post a pic today.

So, I started her up and it looks like I will need to mod the shroud despite trimming the "points" on the fan. Here is what I took off.

The fan just tick's at idle and when in high rev's I'm sure it would not be good. So, add another project to the Prado......

If you guys trim the fan too much

Well, good to know!

Modding the shroud is pretty easy if you have some sheet metal, snips, rivets and a small welder. Otherwise, could take the truck to a sheet metal fab place and see if they can do it for you?

Didn't even need a welder. I had a sheet of black plastic laying around (I salvage old backpacks and luggage) and realized the only part of the shroud that came close to the new fan was in the corner where the depth of the bump on the top wasn't enough. See attached photos. So I could cut that section off, move that piece of the shroud towards the radiator, rivet, then add my extra piece of plastic and rivet that too. It works fine.

I cut along this line. I found using a reciprocal saw with a wood blade worked best, but made some mistakes along the way.

It works.

Very nice work! Thanks for sharing an easier way to do it!

Nick, as other have said already, many thanks for putting together all the tips on helping the Prado run cooler. I'm in the process of ordering the 16361-17010 part from Canada shop, but the part they have measures 18.5" OD. From your research, it looks like you show a 17.5" OD. Wanted to confirm before getting the part shipped all the way back to Cali. Thanks again

If it measures 18.5" it won't work for the Prado shroud. You need one that measures 17.5". Not sure why that part number is coming up as an 18.5" fan? I got mine used, so can't recommend a place to buy one of these fans. Maybe ask one of the guy's above who have bought one new and installed it?

I am purchasing it entirely based on part number and original intended vehicle. Where are you finding the 470mm specs?
I am willing to risk it for 38 bucks either way. I will update once I have it in hand.

Now that I also flushed the radiator and found out I was over a gallon low, my water gauge never rises above 1/2, even when climbing towards home at 60mph up the 2400' grades we have every direction from here. 95% of the time, it sits at 1/4 to 1/3.

AWESOME! That is great to hear.

I'm wondering if that fan is really 470mm? That does work out to 18.5". I got my fan used, but compared it to the fan on my friend's 1990 HDJ81 and it was identical (in all dimensions). So I looked up that part number, and that is what I put in this thread. I wonder if maybe the original part number has been superseded by a new one that is 18.5" now? Hope you get the right one....

@Jim from Idaho and @JimmyPrado where did you guys get your fans from?

Hey there!

I also ended up getting this fan (16361-17010) and mine measures 17.5"

I got it from ebay as per following link:
Engine Cooling System Fan Blade Fits Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ73 HZJ81 HDJ80 SUV | eBay

I was also lucky cos my factory shroud (LJ79) didn't require modifying since it is larger at top when compared to the LJ78 ones, yet still had the same fan.

That is a good price on that fan, and thanks for confirming it fit. Did you find an improvement in cooling?

Also really good to know about the LJ79 fan shroud being larger at the top! So if someone wanted to keep it all 'OEM' parts with out modifying their LJ78 shroud, they could order the LJ79 shroud. Here is the part number for the LJ79 shroud: 16711-54390 or 16711-54391 (updated) . Not cheap at $122USD + shipping from Japan....

True, but would it line up to the bolting points on the radiator ? Seems like that's also different, as mine fills from it rather then the thermostat housing.

Hello! Been reading through all of the lj78 build threads and loving the info! I’m a new lj78 owner but not new to landcruisers. Have a 69’ fj40 and 93’ fzj80. This 78 already has the 3l head. Just installed an brand new turbo as well as oil catch. I rebuilt the fan clutch with 15,000 cst but wanting to upgrade the fan. Already has Evans coolant in it ;) I want to order the fan but want to make sure the fan part # 16361-17010 is indeed 17.5”. It seems there’s mixed measurements and some confusion. Hopefully you can help :)
