I am considering installing a permanent GMRS/FMRS or possibly a HAM that also has GMRS function in the Cruiser. Right now I use Motorola handhelds when I need them and they work fine since I don't need them other than a few times per year but the idea of getting some longer range and not having to keep handhelds charged is a nice prospect. I want it to be a hidden install, possibly under one of the front seats or in the cubby near the shifter that houses the wireless charger (which sucks). So something with the display on the mic is preferable unless installing a unit small enough in that wireless phone charger cubby that still has all of the functions/display on the face is an option. So what are you guys using, where do you have it installed and what's your antenna setup?

Good topic. Subscribed.

I’ve been happy with the Midland MXT275. All the controls are on the mic, so you can place the control box anywhere. I zip tied it against the firewall kind of above the gas pedal. Get an Ethernet plug adaptor and place it at your position of choice.

Thoughts on a better antenna? Where are y'all running them? I was considering the Kaon side mirror mount for a stubby but I could probably come up with something off of the front bumper as well.

I like to keep everything as simple and removable as possible when not in use, so my MXT275 is attached to the center console with the fuzzy kind of velcro, mic lives in the glovebox until needed, and the magnet mount antenna goes onto the back center of the hood or under the hood when not in use. It's out of the way even when in use and disappears entirely in a minute and uninstalls fast with no damage if/when I sell my vehicle.

Antenna is hardly noticeable:

@mcgaskins yours looks clean and simple. Can you take a couple closer pictures showing the attachment to the center console?

Thank you and that's what I was going for. There isn't anything to see regarding the attachment point however - I literally just put a small strip of velcro on the console and a small piece on radio and mated them. To remove, you simply just pull back on the radio and the exposed piece of velcro is black and soft and disappears on the console. Removing it permanently is simple as well and usually doesn't even leave residue, but anything left behind is easily removed with simple cleaner.

What source are y'all tapping for power?

See posts 14 and 18 for my Yaesu install. Happy with the set up.

I run mine directly to the aux battery so it can stay on full time. If you don’t have an aux batt, I’d try tapping into one of the under-hood ACC-powered fuse slots. Or in a real pinch, the “wipers” fuse in the drivers kick panel (the 15w of the MXT275 should be a rounding error for the 360w that circuit is designed to).

I’d hate to forget leaving the radio on and killing the battery.

If you go with a ACC-switched circuit, Midland sells an upgraded mic that has a knob on the top for volume that will automatically turn on when the unit gets power. That alleviates forgetting to turn the radio back on when you hop in the car.

FWIW I run a midland ghost antenna on a hood hinge ditch light mount.

Any issues with the adhesive surviving hot parking situations? Or does it not move/slime because there isn't the weight of the radio on it most of the time?

I have some 3M VHB holding up the mic for my setup and I’ve been impressed that it hasn’t budged in the slightest after a few years now. I’ve used 3M Dual Lock to hold up a sizable battery to the ceiling of my roof top tent. I actually wish I had used a smaller surface of tape, because it’s difficult to pull the battery off from the two mated tapes! The Dual Lock is also holding my solar panels to the RTT roof. Holding up well so far!

On the 3M website they have the example of using Dual Lock to hold automotive interior panels in place, so it seems they’ve designed it for the kinds of temps a vehicle interior goes through.

I’m always sure to prep the area with alcohol or paint prep cleaner.
