Do you legitimately go around announcing “I drive a Land Cruiser”??

Follow up question, do you really care what people say back? Scratch that, I’m pretty sure I have that one answered. We simply operate in two different realms.

I hover in a pretty Land Cruiser forward environment. I’m often introduced to friends of friends as “this is my pal Kurt, he’s into Land Cruisers…” or often someone comments on a Land Cruiser related hat, hoodie, shirt or shoe I’m wearing… often with a “love those old things”, “my hunting buddy had one”, or “I learned to drive in a Land Cruiser, wish I never sold it”. To date, not a single human has even made even the slightest comment or assumption that my interest in Land Cruisers it centered on model that’s been out less than a year. Quite the opposite.

I fear spending time around the people in your sphere. Mankind is not looking down at Land Cruiser owners because of the LC250. They may be looking down on those proclaiming they are a “Real” Land Cruiser owner when being asked what dressing they want on their salad.

Damn, drama much? :D

I think you are upset that you confused the 250 as direct 200 replacement, somehow assuming Toyota found a way to make the next HD wagon LC with smaller chassis/drivetrain and $30k discount. This does not mean the sky is falling on the LC community and LC owners are not shunned by Joe Q. Public lol 😂
You can buy brand new 300’s for 50/60k USD in base spec in the GCC. Toyota decided to only sell the most expensive 200 series and the similarly fully loaded LX570 at the exact same price and then wondered by people didn’t buy it. If Toyota only sold the 4Runner in platinum trim it also wouldn’t be the sales success it is today.

So yes, Toyota has figured out how to sell a HD LC with a “deep discount” but they don’t want to sell it here! Just everywhere else.

Why would the price going down on the 200 be a bad thing?

If you crash it and insurance pays out less - you can also go buy a replacement for less. It's a wash. And the insurance coverage rate should go down. That's all good things right?

If you want to buy a used 200 - it costs less. That's a win. A $20k LC200 starts to look like a pretty solid option as a base for a family utility vehicle. And a $60k lease return MY20 or 21 LX570 is starting to be a relatively good pretty good value too.

The scenario that is a negative is if you want to sell a 200 and buy a different vehicle. But I'm assured that that's never happened and likely never will. People buy LC200's for 25 years. I assume all the used 200s on the market are from drivers who are recently deceased, imprisoned, or similar. So, we can ignore that option right?

Seems like it's a win win situation. 🤷‍♂️

If there was money to be had in selling the stripped-down 300 in North America, they'd be doing it. You don't really think an international conglomerate that exists purely to make money would leave money on the table "just because," do you?

They're not selling it here because consumers have voted with their wallets and have clearly shown what they care about: cup holders, massaging seats, touch screen displays, and virtue signalling whatever the TV tells them.

There are exactly 5 people in North America that would buy a stripped-down 300 for $50-60k, and they're all sitting here on Mud, complaining that they can't. That is the entire extent of that consumer market.

From a marketing / business standpoint, it’s hard to argue with what Toyota has done. They are selling a lot of LC 250s. Most people that can afford a $100k plus new car in the US are happy / happier to get the LX. Most of these new buyers keep their vehicle on pavement at all times and would never consider doing anything else, and they trade cars ever 3-5 years. Toyota isn’t losing many sales on the 300 level. At the next tier, Toyota is very finely segmenting a much larger market with the LC, 4R, Sequoia, and GX. There is a trim / style / image for all different types. It’s smart.

Well said. .

It is always hilarious to see when people think Toyota are idiots, and we know better than them on market demographics and desires.

nah not yet but we can always be in touch. my 2,100 fj60 or my 9,197 mile fj62 are likely more valuable in current market

we bought 5 when local dealer principal who is my neighbor, couldnt move them

wife dd one. 2 sold in bat. one stays in our montana property (4700 miles), and delivery mile one in storage
Wait a minute—you’re not poor!

Wow! What a collection. Very jelly.

It sounds like you prefer to drive an early 200 series over the others. Curious why you like to drive that one over the others?
Easy. The ‘08 has already depreciated

Sorry to digress, but where is this museum? I would love to visit someday.

Edit: I gather from the Google that the museum is in SLC. I’ll definitely make a trip one day. So cool!

Come anytime, if timing allows, I'd love to show you around personally.

110% nailed it.

Explain the existence of the Jeep Wrangler product/market and Toyota's complete ignorance that market exists in North America?

They (Toyota) are smarter than me.

If I could explain Toyota's thinking, I would be head of Toyota, instead of hanging out with loser 250 owners.

The following Toyota products are direct competitors to the Jeep Wrangler line:

- FJ
- 4Runner
- Tacoma
- LC250

Complete ignorance, you say?

An interesting twist on the Land Cruiser vs Land Cruiser Prado vs Land Cruiser II vs Land Cruiser Amazon vs Land Cruiser Bundera vs Land Cruiser Sahara vs Land Cruiser Autuna, etc discussion.

It was my long standing belief that in most cases, Toyota only called them a Prado where they offered both a full size (for example the 80 or 100) AND the light duty such as a 90. I knew there were cases where they just called them both Land Cruiser but I assumed that was more limited to smaller volume market. However, @cruiserdan and I had a fun conversation with a friend visiting the museum today. For context he was deeply involved with Toyota marketing in Iceland (and Europe) for some time in the 80's and 90's as I recall. At one time, Iceland had the 70 (and they got both the heavy chassis and light chassis), the 80, 90, 100, nearly all sold at dealerships simulataneously (think 1998 when the 80 and 100 were overlapping)... all just called Land Cruiser. He said it was confusing then and only got more confusing when the 120 came to Iceland, 120>100, it must be bigger/better right?

As we know that isn't how the numbers work and they instead just started saying "Land Cruiser 100" and "Land Cruiser 120" to differentiate them in conversation. He mentioned there was a big marketing push to launch the 100 as the Land Cruiser Luxor so that it was different than the other two Land Cruisers they had on dealer lots, being the 80 and 90. However, a nasty terrorist attack in Luxor, Egypt took place late 1997 just as 100's were arriving. They departed from that name and went back to calling them Land Cruiser 100.

To think the "Real" Land Cruiser could have been the one with the sub-name in more markets (i.e. Land Cruiser Sahara or Land Cruiser Luxor). Dan can share his similar story on the Toyota Celica Olympic that never was.

EDIT: Sure enough, Toyota trademarked the name Land Cruiser Luxor in the UK, Norway, etc in 1997

I'm officially going to start calling my 100 Series the "Luxor" edition (with zero offense to those impacted by the Luxor massacre )
