Here's a short story. The last time I drove my truck ( last thursday ) I got a horrendous bearing whine that I thought was coming from the transmission. It was the worst upon down shifting and deceleration while in gear, so I stopped doing those two things. Today I had to go to Wally World to pick up a prescription. Anyway, driving down a 5 lane road, heard a pop, a bang and then this part shot out across the road, luckily missing all of the cars traveling on it at that time. Anyway, I know what this part is but I want to see who will figure it out first, and who can explain to me how the hell this came out.....

Good luck!

Yikes! I hope you didn't break any gears in your T-case, or even the cases themselves when that thing came out. Where is the lock tab that keeps it in place? Be warned that all your tranny lube came out as well because that idler shaft fits into a hole on the forward end that goes directly into the trans. I found that out the hard way.

yep, idler shaft for your tcase.

Hmmm, some shaft from the transfer that gears ride on? (total guess, I've never been into one of the T-cases)

F the idler shaft.....I want to see inside that case!

Only recently, with more revelations from the declassified and recently released KGB files, were we able to understand that a covert KGB op included agents, posing as former WWII Japanese soldiers working in Toyota plants, were able to insert a time release minature (nuke) missile, secretly inserted in all rigs built that were to be exported to "Allied (NATO) Territories." I would hope you notified the FBI of this event. It appears the trigger mechanism failed to engage upon release since you are able to report this event. Nevertheless, the fissile material may still be in the remaining capsule, to be certain I would have someone use a CDV-770 to determine if there are radioactive seepage from the capsule.
And, this may also serve as a cool script for the next X-Files movie.
Or, as with most, it could be that I have no idea what it is . . . . . .;)

Idler shaft of the transfer case is correct, but that was probably an easy question. Anyway, I've never been into my t-case, soon to change, but I do not know how it came out. Jan-78FJ40 mentioned the locking tab, which I'm sure I've seen before, but if that is why it came out then why are my bearings messed up? I haven't pulled it apart yet, but I can definitely see that the rear most bearing that this shaft rode on is completely decimated.

Another question, what exactly does this shaft do within the transfer case? Even though this thing jettisoned itself out of the rig, the truck can still move under it's own power! This came out while I was driving, and kept driving with less noise than before. On top of that, I can still stop, start, shift and accelerate normally, for the most part. How is this possible? Were there any gears riding on this?? I'm assuming that there were.

I'm downloading the FSM right now so I can get a better look at what's going on.

That definitely explains it for me, thanks tonkota. I guess I'm going to pull it apart either tomorrow or friday to get a feel for how many of the bearings and gears are foobared now.

You’re fxxxed!!!! That is a catastrophic failure. You lost the lock tab, and the idler shaft worked its way out. Start looking for a good used case.

not necessarily. if it still modes, the gears will be fine, most likely. chances are that a complete rebuild with new bearings will fix this. and the rebuild kits come with a new idler shaft anyway. a rebuild takes the better part of a day only.
It will be blatantly obvious if the gears are still good.
good luck,
Jan

Wait, that shot across 5 lanes of traffic? Wow. That's rad. I mean, that sucks. Good luck!

The idler gear with out an idler shaft = broken parts. I H8 to be the bearer of bad news but it is a million to one shot that the gear did not loose any teeth.

Uh, wow Johnny.
I don't look in on Mud for weeks and this is what greats me what I come back? :p

DO NOT DRIVE IT ANYWHERE.

The rebuild is easy, after you find out how many parts you broke.
The idler shaft does not ride on any bearings, it is not a spinning part, but ALL the movement in the transfer case is "transfered" across it.
You have no need of a Macnamara gear, they are for auto tranys with worn output splines.
Let me know what you end up needing.

holy toyota......only a fj could loose the idler shaft and still keep runnning....wow.....dam*....wow

good luck

hey if you rebuild....please post your proceedure....im going to do mine when i have to replace my clutch, and fix all my leaks...so it would be cool to see it done.... and since you have the opportunity it would be cool.....

good luck
