Let's discuss tires for a BJ75 (1 Viewer)

I have been using 235/85/16 the last 10 years. A much better tyre and rim size IMO. The overall height of the tyre fitted is pretty much the same as the 16 inch rim and tyre that comes with the current 7* series, close to 32". Keeps your speedo at 1% above what it should be, with the odometer almost exact.
I had 33" tyres before, it slows the acceleration and adds a load onto the brakes.

Running 255/85/16 and I certainly feel the load. My
Next set will be 235/85/16.

If getting new rims I honestly wouldn’t bother with a 15” and would certainly make the upgrade to a 16”

Another vote for 235/85R-16. Got 'em on my Troopy and love them. I've never gone for big, fat tires on 4x4's. They might be fun, and some folks think they look cool, but I can't see any advantage in most situations, and usually they're a disadvantage IME.

Of course, you'd need to upgrade to 16" rims.

Everyone ends up back at the 235's

I run 235/85R16 also. Currently Duratracs in E-rated. I love them. They're an excellent road tire, good for towing, super tough and it's down right amazing where I can get with them. They're also very affordable and available everywhere. Really they're the perfect all round or expedition tire. Not perfect for hardcore wheeling, but then you're looking at needing a 35"+ tire with lots of other modifications.

I think I would run a 235/85/16 and the 42601-60262-03 Toyota wheels. The wheels fit without drama, look appropriate on the truck, and they're Toyota. And the tire is almost identical to the 7.50 r16 tubed tire for the stock split rims. Plus, they’re available everywhere in a variety of brands/models, and not expensive.

I think @Reinhardtius' truck is magnificent.

Of course, none of this matters because I no longer own a Land Cruiser. Let alone a 70 series.

Sorry to thread-jack. Carry on.

If you get a flat, you can get a tow to a place that can service a tubeless tire. If you travel outside of these areas, you probably bring a spare with you.

Maybe, but last time I got a flat I was halfway between Warburton and Giles Meteorological station, about 230klms in either direction and tow trucks start at $1500-2000 a day out there. I had 2 spares and limped into Yulara with 2 flat tyres.
Tyre plugs and tubeless tyres are your best friend.

What is the factory axle ratio on a BJ75 ?

3.70 or 4.11 !

Edit : Just found it should be K08x. So 4.11

In my opinion the 33x10.50x15 is the near perfect tire.

33x10.50x15s

Or go to 16s and run these Cooper 255/85/16.....33" narrow tire. These things are the bees knees. What a great tire.

Road/Mild Off Road/"overland tires": 255/85-16 Toyo M55's on OEM steelies.

A little more "off-road" oriented: 255/85/16 Toyo MT's (on OEM steelies):

I realize the stock tire size is roughly a 32” tall tire or a 235/85/16.

Several of you recommended a 255/85/16 or 33” tall tire. That is roughly a 4% taller tire than OEM. Is that little bit of rubber overdrive an issue? Or does that size tire work just fine?

Old thread/question, but I think the 255 works fine and am shopping for my second set. Hard to believe I've had the Troopy for almost 5 years and worn out a set of tires already.

Jumping into this subject.

Spotted two Defenders parked back-to-back in Basel, Switzerland. Foreground has 7.5 x 16, further out has 235/85/R16. In real life, they look very much the same, with the 7.5 being ever-so-slightly thinner.

I currently have on my Troopy 265/75R16, which were the size it came with from Australia. I have some new take-off OEM rims thanks to @John Young and on these I plan to put 235/85R16, which seem to be the OEM size.

235/85R16: 31.7" diameter, 9.3" width
265/75R16: 31.9" diameter, 10.4" width
what many of you seem to like:
255/85R16: 33.5" diameter, 10" width

The 255 seem to be a bit big for my tastes, I would probably go 265/75 again if looking for a wider footprint. Looking forward to some proper skinnies though!

Great intel. I would just like to add the 7.5R16 tire specs for comparison:

7.5R/16: 31.8" diameter, 8.7" width
235/85R16: 31.7" diameter, 9.3" width
265/75R16: 31.9" diameter, 10.4" width
255/85R16: 33.5" diameter, 10" width

So I'm just watching ASPW -
225/95R16 seems standard for Australia deliveries. So then 255/85R16 would be diameter equivalent. Live and learn... 😳
