Hey guys,

I want to buy a present for one of my friends. He adores camping. I know that the last his lantern died very quickly. I want to buy any quality lantern for him. Can you name good models/brands?

The budget is $100

bump, I found this model. 5959 WEATHERRITE ECO-LANTERN - MROSupply.com
It looks nice, but I do not understand how bright it can be. I found it has 157 lumens.
is it very bright? what does it mean?

In the 'brochure' one of the more nonsensical statements:

"NO BATTERIES
ECOLANTERN™
uses a 6V 2.5AH valve
regulated rechargeable battery to give
you supreme illumination every time
without having to replace batteries."

WTF is the 'valve'? Looks like some typical made in China light with a huge markup. "NO BATTERIES" but then states there's a regulated rechargeable battery inside.... hand waving fluff..

157 Lumens (not 156 or 158, but 157)... from a bunch of little 5mm LEDs from the look of it. It's not that much light for modern LED technology and does NOT appear to be able to be dimmed (which for a LED light is crazy).

I'm sure you can do much better and find a product from a company that you could at least return if/when it breaks.

cheers,
george.

My wife has the LuminAID Packlight 16 and uses it double duty as a pillow sometimes. They were very quick to replace it when she developed a small tear near the photocell.

I'm gonna take it fishing one night and use it as a float light when she isn't looking!

Their products are more like personal illumination devices than anything else. They don't really throw light so much as glow. Perfect for in the tent or prepping food on the tailgate.

I bought one of these years ago and it is an awesome light for the price. We camp roughly 3wks a year with little kids and I am never afraid of letting them play with it. it always works, you can remove the hood, and hang it upside down in your tent. Its not Coleman gas lantern on full power bright, but I highly recommend it.

^1 Yep, the rayovac is a decent little light. We have 3 or 4 around the house. Good for emergency lighting and decent around the camp. Pretty rugged for the price - not the cheap/brittle plastic.

cheers,
george.

I don't have one but the Coleman Quad looks very interesting.

Four removable light panels that make up one lantern, or can be spread out around the campsite.

Rechargeable.

$50
