@options2 Awesome thanks! By driving lights are you referring to the lights in the side markers?

Sorry missed this. I mean the ones in the headlight assembly as shown below. They are also the ones that flash when unlocking or locking the truck with the factory remote. This pic is old and before I changed them

Thanks for posting up all the info for the LED upgrades.

Just finished up changing all the lights in my cruiser over to blue LEDs and figured I would post up these pics, as I hadn't seen photos of an all blue gauge cluster yet.

Thinking the clock is a little too bright and might go back to put some wax paper behind it...... A little tired of messing around with dash pieces for right now though!

Great write up! Mainly, the instructions on the best/easiest way to remove the gauge cluster was quite helpful, as I'm not sure I would have known what was going on behind the cluster with the wiring harnesses without those tips.

Just changed all of my bulbs out to green LEDs to keep everything uniform. I'll take some photos when it gets dark enough to see what's going on......not sure if I like the green instruments yet, as it's a change from OEM, but I'm gonna drive it for a while and see.

In the meantime, does anyone have a tip on how the gauge cluster can be "bench tested" before reinstallation to see if the polarity on the LEDs are correct? I was just rolling the dice on each light's correct orientation when I reinstalled the cluster, and in fact, two of the bulbs need to be turned around.......what a b*^ch to have to pull the cluster out to reorient the bulbs! If anyone has any tips on how the cluster could be tested before reinstallatiom (like the HVAC cluster - you can actually plug it in while you're installing each individual bulb to instantaneously know if you've got the bulb orientation correct), that would be a HUGE help.......!

Thanks!

Great right up.

I had a question, I'm looking to replace the instrument panel bulbs on a 2000 Land Cruiser, and the postings here say its a # 74 bulb. But when I look up the bulb on parts websites, they list a # 194 bulb for the instrument panel? I'm confused are they different? Which one is correct? Am I missing something. I guess I could go ahead and pull a bulb, measure it and then order the bulbs, but I was hoping someone here could answer this.

Thanks

According to Super Bright LED's website, the #74 bulb is used in the glove box while the #194 is used in the instrument panel.

Looks good. I'll have to come back and read the entire thread. My "d" light is also out, but I thought it was supposed to be like that thinking it'd be a bright distraction while driving. I'll be leaving that off as well.

There are no #194 bulbs in the back of my instrument panel. Website you referenced is incorrect. You can see the bulbs I've listed that are required to accomplish this install in the first post.
AFAIK, there are no #194 bulbs under the dash or in th glovebox. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hey Lee,

The following is the order I put in with Super Bright LEDs a couple months ago to replace all of the lights in my instrument panel and gauge cluster. The only lights I did not change were the individual bulbs for gear indicators / check engine etc....

I hope this helps you out.

Looking to replace those. Sylvania's site says they're 1157A, but it also says those are the same as the indicator/park lamp. I'm upgrading the headlights and I don't want that yellow bulb in there, but I do want to leave the running light/indicator stock. Thanks.

Follow up on instrument lights and Question:

First, Anthonycd and AK Wes are CORRECT (thanks), it is a #74 for the instrument panel and NOT #194 (despite many websites saying #194)!

I ordered and received some #74 LED bulbs and finally pulled the panel and put them in (note I only replaced the 6 "background" lights - I did not replace any of the shift indicators etc.).
Here are some observations:
  1. Remove the steering column cover to get the instrument panel out. You can do it without removing the steering column cover, but you will likely scratch the plastic on the cover (as I did), or break something else (as others have posted).
  2. The #74 LED bulbs I received were too loose in the sockets. I don't know if this was because of the LED bulbs or if the metal contacts in my sockets were simply expanded from the glass bulbs. Regardless, I simply took a small screw driver and bent the contacts so they would hold the bulbs in place.
  3. I used white LEDs, but instruments now have a very blue tint. Anthonycd mentioned this in his original post, but I was surprised at how blue it was. I wonder what some type of UV or blacklight LED (if this exists) would look like (maybe this is a terrible idea?)?
  4. I had a lot of issues when putting the panel back in - specifically my turn signals on the instrument panel wouldn't light, and/or the P and R would both be lit. Not sure what caused this (I took the panel in and out several times trying to find gremlin, but no luck). Finally I put it in and secured all the panel screws an everything worked? Maybe I wasn't fully seated on the connectors? Maybe one of the sockets was bad?
QUESTION: is there a good way to make sure that all 6 of the "background" lights are lit? I have one socket that seemed odd (missing a small chunk out of the plastic, and I'm questioning whether this one is lit and/or if I have an LED light in backwards (incorrect polarity). I don't have any really dark spots, but the speedo needle seems very dim and I suspect at least one of the lights isn't lit. I have pulled the panel and rotated a light, but with all the other issues (see number 4 above), I'm not sure if I am all lit or not. Any suggestions on an easy way to see if they are all lit?

Lee,

Who did you order from? After some searching around on other forums, I found those that purchased the 6000k bulbs have a hint of blue vs 5000k are more white.

I plan to order some 5000k bulbs from vled as soon as they're back in stock.

LEX,

The ones I ordered were 6000k. I think getting some 5000k would be the way to go...

I wish there was a way to test the polarity before getting the instrument panel back in? Any ideas?

Couldn't you use a battery, couple of wires and pre-test each bulb for polarity? Mark them. Take out existing bulb and note its orientation in the socket. Test it using the battery.

Doing mine a little at a time. Might do some this evening after work.

Just did my center console.

The switches pop out. Look for the white button. It's where the bulb is. Using a small flat head, turn and pull the bulb with a tooth pick.

Here is where the bulb for the shifter is. Simply twist, pull out swap bulbs and reverse the process.

Final results.
