LED Headlight Install, 2000lm each no external driver

I hope so for $250 thats why I took a risk and bought the $60 These were the cheapest but I researched the CREE leds they put in and in conjunction with their internal drivers I gave them a try :)

Hey guys, I'm a bit of a geek for anything LED. I haven't had car headlights LED yet, but I've had hiking and biking LEDs for a while now and take interest in the tech behind the scenes. The input so far in this thread has been awesome, and my first car headlamp LED kits are en route right now.

When buying LED "stuff", please be aware that there are TONS of LED emitter types out there. There's an explosive development in this field, and new and better emitters are rapidly being put to market. This means there will always be heaps of cheap stuff that are yesterdays news.
The most common evolution of emitters, is that new versions are usually putting out more light per watt than the previous. Maybe not so important in cars, but for stuff you're going to carry - it matters.

Regardless - stay away from the LED bulbs that are stuffed with tons of emitters. This is really cheap stuff. Maybe they can do for a number plate light.
Be careful if you see someone claiming mad lumens... it's usually too good to be true. The china sellers are unfortunately worse than most in exaggerating. If they for a second thinks its going to boost the sales to claim 10.000 lumens from a bulb, thats what they will try to sell....

There are two commonly used emitters today, the XM-L2 and the MT-G2. The latter is a big larger than the first. the best XM-L2 emitter revision is named U3. The best MT-G2 emitter is the P0. The difference in output for the same wattage, is about doubled from the first MT-G2 emitter to P0, so it does matter.

It looks like the better bulbs now are the ones with MT-G2. Based on the great recommendations in this thread, I found some good resellers for my Euro H4 headlamps. I've ordered three kits today - two Cree 3200lm kits, one with external drivers, the other one without - as well as the vleds ultra, which is based on Philips Luxeon emitters. The vleds are on pre-order for another 3 weeks, but you get a $50 discount so it might be worth your while.

I have the Lifetime LEDs in my 1992 low beams. I spent $150 on them kind of accidentally. I ordered a set of 9005 and a set of 9006 for my brothers 2005 LX470. When I went to install them in his truck, I found out that his low beams are H1 bulbs, not the 9006 that Toyota (instead of Lexus) would have been. Anyway, I ended up with a set of 9006 low beams and I decided to put them in my 92 FJ80 instead of my 100 series.

I have been running the 9006's for about a year now and I am very pleased. I am very pleased with the output. They are definitely brighter than my 2001 that still has standard 9006's. Even though they are much brighter, I have never been flashed by other motorists thinking that I left my brights on. I have been so pleased with them, that I have decided to drop another $150 for the brights (9005).

I'm not sure if some of the later model 80's have automatic headlights but a word of caution. My brother has had the Lifetime LED 9005's in his high beam location (2005 LX470) for a year now as well and he is also very pleased. He still has the standard H1's in his low beam location. He said that if he leaves his headlight switch in the automatic position, all of the lights go out like they are supposed to when he turns off the key. But, when he leaves the switch in the automatic position AND leaves the stick pushed forward (high beams on), all of the lights still go out when you turn off the key but the little fan motors in the high beams keep running. He said it is no problem, he just has to remember to pull the stick back to low beams before he kills the truck.

He still very much loves the light output though, and he still wants me to acquire the H1 LED bulbs whenever they finally hit the market. Lifetime has been saying for a while now that H1 replacements are coming.

I have not commented in this thread before now because I felt like this thread was more about the price of LED headlights, not really the performance. If I could buy basically the same system for $60 instead of $150 and all I have to give up is the warranty, I am definitely interested. The lifetime warranty is not worth $90 extra dollars to me, but it is worth $50 to me.

Question on the LX470 install - do the LED 9005 HighBeams work as DRL and high beam? Or did you have to disable DRL? I was looking at HID for the H1/LowBeams, as I haven't seen any LEDs for H1 yet (plus wonder if they would work or be better in the LX470 projector...). I'm looking into upgrading lights for both my 80 and 100.

Anyone try these? They look like similar product, but ship from US in a few days:

They look the same. But need to see the box. 2000lm isn't much of a bright light though.

2000lm isn't super bright but its a heckuva lot brighter than the stock halogens. When I installed the LEDs it is almost night and day difference (pun intended). They are bright enough that there is only an incremental difference between lows and highs. Thats why I ended up ordering the highs.

It has been a year since I put them in his truck so I'm not sure. I know that I did not disable the DRL's and I think the Lifetime LEDs worked as DRL and as high beam. I remember thinking that the worst that could happen is that they burn out prematurely, but then they are warrantied for life. They have not burned out.
 
How do I replace the high beams. I only see the lows from under the hood and don't see anythign in the manual to replace them.
 
They are both closest to the radiator.
 
For those who have aimed their lights were yours pointing high?

I still see two bright spots within the two beams. Each spot is at 10 and 2 o'clock.

Anyone else have this issue?
 
Mine are fine, you have the bulb housing tight onto the back of the headlight ?
 
Yes, they are in there tight. I will mess with them.

I had to aim mine easy if your adjusters don't break. took me 2 days to adjust...blah!

Try clocking the bulb to get rid of the two spots. I think they need to point up/down rather than left / right in the housing. I turned mine and the spots went away an. I think that is the orientation they are currently .
