The consensus on Oiled air filters (either K&N or TRD Et All) seems to be that they are Ok on the street but are less than optimum for off road, particularly in dusty conditions. I have used all three in my 80 and I prefer the OEM paper filter for overall vehicle operation.

When I feel a bit frisky I put my under-size blower pulley on and slap the TRD filter in the housing. ;) Lots of fun for street racing but sucky off road 8)

SP, just went (and am going) through the same exercise with my almost new to me '97.
My suggestion would be to think in terms of what can cause the most damage if it were to go bad and start with that and then the rest in that order. First thing I did was to go through everything quickly and check levels of all fluids and condition of brakes, belts, hoses etc. Just a check no replacement yet, but went over everything trying to assess the condition and the work needed. Then one at a time starting to change everything in priority (read potential damage) order.
Makes it looks much less insurmountable too...
Enjoy and welcome!

(oh yes, don't forget to check the A/C temp! :D)

StressPuppy,

Giving credit where credit is due: Woody is the forum admin and founder of IH8MUD. His able assistants here in the 80 forum are Junk and Gumby and all 3 are doing a great job. You'll notice this section keeps a "work friendly" vocabulary and you will seldom see/read posts that you wouldn't want your two boys to read. [ Venturing into "Chat" is different though :D ]

It helps if you keep a sense of humor and ask if you don't get an insider joke (like E's A/C temp above)

Ok, I'm asking about the A/C joke............

As for buying parts of cruiserparts.net, I tend to shy away from used parts. I've had two bad experiences with buying used, and will usually persue new parts unless they are cost pro-hibitive.

Let's just say "e9999" has a little bit of a obsessive compulsive element to him.

He wanted to compare his AC temps to ours....

arumph!
still not done with that investigation, either...
gotta fix that A/C better.

Eric,

you can compare it to my A/C temperature here in the tropical climate. I have always cold hands when my A/C is on. :D

The Understatement of CY 2004.

For details, read Eric's first 500 posts where he takes us through the excruciating details of his search for the world's most perfect 80 series cruiser including the mandatory requirement that the vehicle he deemed worthy to own would measure a precise 47 degrees Fahrenheit out of all A/C outlets; sustained for 1 hour with an ambient temperature of a minimum of 92 degrees and between 81 and 85 percent relative humidity. The target temperature had to be obtained within 37 seconds after the vechicle was started with a cabin temperature of 118 degrees or more measured at 3 locations within the vehicle interior.

All of these (otherwise perfect) vehicles failed the A/C test so Eric summoned the wisdom of IH8MUD to ask each of us to go out and buy a specialized A/C thermometer and measure the temperature of our vents under specific conditions so he could obtain the mean, mode, and median temperatures that would enable him to fine tune his A/C temperature requirements.

That's the way I remember it. I could be wrong.

:D

With pink pokadots? :princess:

dang Beo, that's good to remember! I had forgotten already that I had done that and was probably gonna do that all over again someday. (Short memory span...) And ask the questions all over again... :D
Better! Now I can concentrate on more mundane things like Birfs and all... That should prove interesting too. Wonder if I could weld a micrometer gauge inside the axle housing to measure the runout while underway...? Hmmm.... How you do you get the signal out, I wonder... :o

:slap: ::)

Never ever ever again will I allow my wife to call me anal retentive or picky!!!!! YIKES! I can't stop laughing! But hey, we each our things we are stuck on.

So, E-, how did it end up? How does the AC work?

Got all the stuff returned to Advance and picked up the stuff at the dealer (Sorry, C-dan. When I am not in a hurry, I'll definitely order from you!).

After all the running around, it is raining and the garage is full of junk so I am held up working on the Cruiser! They say patience is a very, but I say it SUCKS!

Hopefully tomorrow will work out better. Oh, except that my wife said "since you are doing yours, how about an oil change, plugs, etc on my van too?!?!?!". >:( Guess I'll be grease-monkey all day tomorrow.

No need to apologize, I think it is a good idea to have a working relationship with your local dealer. As long as you get what you need in a reasonable time frame, for a reasonable expense, that is what counts.

>> long as you get what you need in a reasonable time frame <<

Just make sure you got the seals and the knuckle bearings. Some dealers might not think those are required. Hopefully you used the part number and descriptions on this site as a working list when talking to the dealer.

I was even nervous buying a rad cap from my local dealer.

I started small! Just wires, PCV, Toyo Red for the radiator, etc. I still have a LOT of reading to do on the other things. I figure I will get the fluids changed, engine tuned up and start working on the list from LandTank. Then I can tackle the big stuff! That will also give me time to order stuff from C-Dan.....

DANG there is so much to learn..................

Since you dragged me into it, some of the stuff on the list can be inspected and then prioritized. For example: look at the PHH, if it's leaking jump that bastich up front, but if it's not and the hose material is still firm to touch and in good shape then you might want to work on something else. Also group some of you're work like the PHH with the coolant flush.

I don't recall the list exactly but I'd look everything over well and then first hit the hot spots in groups. This can be a little more expensive in the beginning but you'll save time and money in the long haul.

Ok, hang on. I get blamed for enough stuff. :D

It was Beowulf who brought you into this by bringing a list of yours from a previous list. (and a good list, I might add....) See the first page about 10 posts down or so.

Here is my list (mainly for me so I know what I have to do!!!). No way it all gets done tomorrow, but I'll do as much as time permits. Tell me if I have missed anything big.
  • Flush the radiator and heater cores.
  • Inspect all cooling hoses.
  • Change oil and filter.
  • Plugs and wires. (Check compression while plugs are out)
  • PCV and grommet.
  • Replace belts.
  • (Air filter is new...)
  • Check the hose from the air filter can to throttle body
  • Check the throttle cable for stickyness, not returning all the way
  • Check the harness where it passes over the EGR valve for wear.
  • Check the heat sheilds on exhaust for rattles.
  • Clean throttle body and check injectors.
  • Check for rust underneath and handle.
  • Stainless steel brake lines.
  • Brake fluid flush and fill.
  • Transmission flush and fill. (Dealer recommended....)
  • Power Steering maintenance (check, replace, flush)
  • Synthetic in the diffs and transfer case.
  • Replace fuel filter.
  • Fan clutch
  • Rebuild the PS pump (or replace???)
  • Change out the EGR modulator
  • Replace idler pulley
  • Front axle and birf work (need to read more....)
  • Suspension (Still researching what to do....)
  • Raise spare tire

I'm tired just typing and reading!!!!!! :'(
