Hey all,

I've come across a factory toyota e-locker 4 sale on a local forum, but the owner is unsure as to what its off, he said it doesn't fit in his hilux and that the guy he bought it off said it was out of an import prado. So i was wonder if there any way of identifying what its from before i go and buy it and find out it won't fit

here a pic of it (don't know if it'll help or not)

cheers Tassie KZJ78

E locker

If its out of a prado id say it will be from a LJ 78 and will be 4.88 ratio .
Someone correct me if im wrong but the KZJ 78 didnt come with the locker option.
Also i think the offset of the crownwheel is different in the 4.88 diffs making them unique 4.88 diff centre and changing ratios may not work .

KZJ78 came with rear locker option only, as did lj78.

count the number of teeth on the pinion and the crown gears. post them up.
if 4.87 then it will be a LJ78 rear diff
if it is 4.11 then it will be a KZJ78 rear diff.

rear locker only as an option for these models as already stated.

But can the elocker be fitted to the front diff??

Be aware that the diff housing it bolts upto is different to a standard diff.
Hence it wont just swap over.
There are numerous retro fits on the net.
I have done it myself fitting one into my KZJ78.
You have to do some grinding and welding on the std diff housing and also remove and add new studs.
I have a file on my other computer which I can PDF and post on a file sharing site for you to view.
Then as stated need to confirm the ratios.
I note in the photo that the pinion nut is not in its factory staked position. Like it has been given a little tighten up. Before you fit you might want a diff shop to give it the once over.

Thanks for the info guys, muchly appreciated, just waiting for the guy who's selling it to get back to me with the ratio's. :)

kbushnz: yeah i'll would love the pdf that you've got if this centre is the right one, i'll let you know ;)

awesome write up kbushnz, so much useful info :)

still waiting for the guy to get back to me with the ratio's :frown:

But my prado is finally being registered tomorrow :)

why wouldn't they?
yes, they are an option on some models. my helpers mini has a factory e/locker rear diff with 4.3 gearing.

but they do not have an option for e/locker front ... and that is too small for a rear.

re-reading the ad he says it doesn't fit the mini ... i wonder if he thought it was a straight drop in??

Hilux mini truck rear diff...
my helpers mini has a factory e/locker rear diff with 4.3 gearing.
re-reading the ad he says it doesn't fit the mini ...

Sorry I may have forgotten that you call 4x4 hilux's mini truck's :whoops:, over here a mini truck is a 2x4 ute

Any way, does that mean this centre is no good to me?
or will i be able to use my ring and pinion in this centre?

Thanks for all the help so far :)

LJ78 4.87 Yes..
KZJ78 is a 4.3
The mini truck / Hilux ran the 4.1

Mine was 4.3.... toydiy.com lists a 4.3 locker also.

As far as I know the hilux lockers carrier bolt pattern and diameter are the same as the LJ / KZJ.
Toyodiy.com also lists the carriers for the KZJ78 and Hilux lockers as the same P/N 41101-35071

Have fun.

thanks for the clarification on gear ratios.

i had been informed in the past that the KZ was 4.11 but never bothered to check into the reality of that statement.
did they have an option for 4.11 or no?

bolt pattern

All of the 8" variations have 30 spline axles and the same bolt pattern. The elocker diffs are an exception as they have a notch out of the gasket surface for the locker actuator fork. Any rear diff housings that are fitted with OEM 4.88 gears have a different casting and pinion is offset so they cannot be regeared with normal aftermarket gears. Its a simple fix though, as you can simply use a standard dropout housing. I have never seen a E-locker with factory 4.88. The hipinion front pinion offset is std even with 4.88 so re-gearing is not an issue in this instance.
