FWIW, This is mine right after it came out last month. 30-years and 236k miles of mostly highway driving. Despite the polished look, there was nothing I could feel with a finger nail on either side. The grease on the shaft is likely from my gloved hand. I guess my other "lesson" was this grease dos not really flow in any meaningful way. So, the effectiveness of your work is really dependent on how well you disassemble, clean and repack the bearings and cage. Bloody clever origami work to do the assembly!
I am not certain I could distinguish between a good seal and a bad one. The original design seemed to do the job and it was still very pliable.
