FWIW, This is mine right after it came out last month. 30-years and 236k miles of mostly highway driving. Despite the polished look, there was nothing I could feel with a finger nail on either side. The grease on the shaft is likely from my gloved hand. I guess my other "lesson" was this grease dos not really flow in any meaningful way. So, the effectiveness of your work is really dependent on how well you disassemble, clean and repack the bearings and cage. Bloody clever origami work to do the assembly!

I am not certain I could distinguish between a good seal and a bad one. The original design seemed to do the job and it was still very pliable.

Yes, but in terms of accumulated crud you look like you are better off than I was. Your wipers appear to be in worse shape.

Good luck. $1 rubber spatula is a wise expenditure as is a tote that can be lined with an uber heavy garbage bag. I worked casually starting on a Thursday evening and wrapping up on a Tuesday am. In between I took a couple of days for my weekly rides and used that time to give paint some time to cure.

Buy snap rings for the cv join... or cleaning them will take even longer. Also packing the cv joint without the shaft in it is a lot easier. ....cleaning takes most of the time of the whole job. I also used a spatula that I got st the dollar store with the turkey baking pans and oven cleaner.

Spatula is a great tool for this! Reminds me i need another one. Last one died.

I like the idea of a lined tote to dump crud into.

I like to use plastic shopping bags as a mitt to scoop out the soup. Scoop handful of greasy soup, turn bag inside out around handful of slop, dump it in your rubbish tote, grab another bag for another scoop.

Yes, I actually had decent luck putting two together scooping up grease and then making a cake decorator's funnel. One was not enough. But, in terms of a "tool" for filling a clean Birfield with grease this seemed spot on. When I pressed the axel in grease oozed up around the bearings.

Not an original idea, copied from someone here.
