Hey all, I have a knocking sound coming from a new to me 2006 lx470. It continues after driving and warming up, and to a similar volume, so I don't believe it's the exhaust manifold. I've included a video with the sound in it below as well as a brief explanation of the vehicle:

2006 LX 470, 218k miles, was told by manheim it was clean so I ordered it through a broker and received it Thursday. It had the sound When I got it.
After logging it onto MyLexus it looks like it spent the first unexciting 170k miles of its life in Texas before heading to Seattle to be owned by an active duty naval sailor. Again, was told it was clean, any help in identifying/troubleshooting the sound is appreciated. Thank y'all!

WOW that is loud,
does the noise change with engine RPM?

No, not necessarily, at least not that I can hear from the drivers seat. Maybe I can have someone else hit the throttle later so I can listen from outside.

ALSO, as an edit: I currently live in the southeast. It is far from cold here compared to most other areas of the country. It's been in the 50s to 60s whenever I've been hearing the noise. I know that rules some things out and not others but just think that is relevant information.

Remove the serpentine belt (the drive belt), fire it up and see if the noise goes away. That will eliminate accessory noise, fixable. If it remains, then it is engine noise. Put your hand on the lower oil pan to feel for knocking vibration. Could be rod slap, bearing failure or other internals. That could require an engine tear down and rebuild, or replacement. Purchase price vs repair dictates next step. Notify Mannheim and see if they have recording and mention of engine knock in their notes.

Return it to Manheim?
I’m not even sure if that’s an option at this point, but I may be looking into it.

Will do, I'm really praying it's just that belt or the tensioner because I can by no means afford a rebuild. Also, will call Mannheim this afternoon after class, maybe they'll work with me.

in a parrallel maneuver, talk to you state automotive dept.

I bet there is a division that deals with situations like this (lemon laws, licensure, fraud etc.). I see this is a national chain w. many locations in s. carolina so they must be licensed. Nice to have in your backpocket for negotiatons if it goes that far (hopefully not).

You probably are going to need to play hardball initially till they realize you know what your talking about.

an attorney (hate to say it) might be helpful if you get pushback after above.

Mannheim is an auction site… not a retailer. Very little recourse available if purchased via broker services. Purchaser from Mannheim will have to initiate buyer protection clause, which may not be available if a “red light” purchase

Noted, I’d hate for it to come to that but I’ll fight them over it if it does come down to it. I’ll start looking into legal stuff after checking the serpentine belt.

Yeahhhh I was wondering about that.

Has the timing belt or any other engine maintenance been done recently? My 07 was sounding like a diesel and after the usual suspects (exhaust manifold, loose spark plugs) were ruled out I had a shop take it apart. They found that the camshaft spider gear was not tensioned correctly and assumed it had happened during the timing belt replacement before I bought it.

Wow I wouldn’t have thought of that, but makes sense. About to take off the serpentine belt and if there’s still noise I’ll get an official diagnosis

FWIW, that would only be possible if the cams had been pulled. If camshaft seals were replaced, sure (pulling out cams is required to do that on a 06-07), but otherwise that wouldn't be possible during just a normal timing belt job.

What about the fan pulley bracket? Mine sounded pretty bad when it failed.

If you pulled the belt then I’m assuming not the issue.

That engine sounds awful, sounds like it’s low on oil or really bad sludge oil that’s not lubricating
