Kings or Icon coilovers?

I grew up on kings for the last 30 years so I guess you can say I am partial to the brand!
I have a couple of friends that work at KING
I have nothing but good stuff to say about them.

P.S.
King started in the late 90's. Prior to that Lance and Brett King worked for Kuster race shocks. When Kuster sold to Sway-A-Way (where I worked from '99 till '02) they started King shocks.

so you likely have been a fan for more like 20 years.

Dylan you are right! If I had been using them for almost 30 years I would be almost 50!!

Let me make my correction .....almost 20 years.

Need a bigger iPhone ....with a keyboard

I've tried to like them.

I will 1st say, yes they are cheap compared to ANY other shock (OME's) worth running.

But I bet we could start a support group / 12 step program for the sheer number of us here in the 80 forum who just shake our heads at those damn things.
Again, good they are cheap, right?

My L's are gone as soon as I can justify it / choose my replacements.

I'm really digging this subject matter here.
I'm sure both work awesome.
But @DylanICON does ICON have coilovers for an 80 series? I've seen some sneak pics of Darrens set up but are those really a coilover or some trippy looking new something that's coming out later?
Pictures or it never happened.

Found it.
We have also done a coil over and bypass set up for the 80 front, using 12" stroke 70mm lift, to run differing coil rates, for more control with our slinky long travel 12" stroke bypass rears.

@jtwopark do you have any better pics of those King coilovers. Is King shocks & coils the same company? I'm not educated about these.

I have Icon shocks on my 4runner and am very happy with the performance.

I have no clue....just that it does well all around! 20k miles on them and looking to just hurry up and finish the build on these money pits!

I have no shocks in the rear of my 80...just some rather ornamental Rancho RS999036's that my sway bar toasted for me. So I'm glad to see a discussion of these shocks as I was just looking at my options yesterday for a better shock and was actually looking at KING and Fox and I briefly looked at ICON when my billfold started slinking away like a caterpillar. Looks like a great option...if I wanted to spend half as much on shocks as I paid to buy the cruiser. I just can't see myself spending that kind of money on shocks for my 80. Maybe if I was building an Ultra 4 or something. @DylanICON I HAVE IT! The solution to this debate and my shock conundrum. Send me 4 free ICON Shocks for a Heavy 80 series and I will do a thorough review on this thread

Is this a coilover thread or a shock thread?
I haven't seen any great pics yet other than the ones I found.

See post #2, OP was mistaken about the 80's sprung configuration. There have been a few 80's with coilovers, but they are always a custom setup, as the coil buckets aren't long enough for coilovers and the spring mounts aren't strong enough to support the weight of the vehicle.

Is this a coilover thread or a shock thread?

It would be very interesting to see a 3.0 bodied shocks showing up!

Common mistake.....SA for IFS...

Mebbe an IS conversion thread??

It would be very interesting to see a 3.0 bodied shocks showing up!

Unnecessary, given the confines of the platform and it's lacking attributes for high speed desert racing.

Apart from potential IBPs, which are also arguably unnecessary for a fat ass station wagon, the additional displacement afforded 1/2" diameter would be for cooling and shock fade isn't a common complaint amongst 80 owners.

What is a common complaint is soending more than $400 on all 4 shocks and a good set of 2.5s exceeds that.....each.

She's a big girl, but she knows no better than smaller. Why screw up a good thing? :)

King va icon is like should I get BMWs or Benz, now and day fox is the other option like Audi is to German car selection. All 3 are very good although fox is cheapest of the bunch and they are damn good!

For the love of god, what ever you do just don't buy OME shocks from the 90s anymore!

Dylan, What rear lower control arms are you running on the 80? Are they the rear lower control arms you guys sell for the 200 series LC or something larger? Whatever they are, they look like they are ICON machined aluminum arms.

same shock as 9780LC has above

springs are our new 3" lift, dual rate coils. designed to net 3" with front bumper and winch and medium amount of gear in the back. Springs are slightly softer for a nicer ride and to gain full travel, than your basic OME spring, when at ride ht, then stiffen when compressed for bottom out resistance
