How do I go about finding the key code for my 82 40 series? Was there any relationship between key codes on the back door versus everything else? I would like to keep it all original, but I'm missing the back door key and need some work on the ignition key.
For the amby doors, the first digit of the code is the key blank type. AFAIK SOR has all the available key blanks. You have to get it from them. The amby door key doesn't match the ignition/door/gas key.
If anyone knows different, please post up.
If you're trying to match from a key, remember the pattern shown is with the key pointing away from you.
You said you didn't have a key? The code is etched in the outside surface of the cylinder under the dust cap. A good locksmith can take the blank and a file and cut it by hand. I had this done for my '47 Ford pickup back in HS. I think it was about $35, which might be $100 nowadays.

I purchased new blank keys from SOR last year. My rig did not come with toyota keys, but some aftermarket ones cut down to size. I took it to an old school lock smith and he cut the blanks to match my aftermarket keys.
On my rig, door and ignition were both first digit 3, but were otherwise different numbers so required different cuts. Locksmith charged me 10 bucks to cut four keys (2 ignition, 2 door). My rear door is most likely a separate key but I haven't gotten around to checking that key yet since I still need to rebuild the hatch mechanism.

I need a new iginiton cylinder, I didn't recieve the key from p.o. so I used a bfh and a mexican "key" needless to say, anybody with a screwdriver could start my FJ (if they knew how)
Just an update. Found the key codes and ordered some factory ignition keys. Had them cut and none worked. Went back and they cut another and it only worked on the gas door. I'm not sure the problem, but they are replacing the factory keys and I think I will go to a locksmith and explain the problem. Their cut keys looked nothing like my key. Go figure.
Update. The key code for the gas door and passenger doors are different. The passenger door key code will work the gas door, but the gas door key code will not work anything else. Evidently there is only 4 tumblers in the gas door, but 6 in the regular doors/ignition. Maybe a precaution Toyota did? Anyways, having a key code cut key now works better than the old key I originally had that wasn't cut right to begin with. Unfortunately, my Toyota dealer does not have the blank cartridge for the back door, so still working on this one.
