Has anyone tried Kroil yet? I had good results with PB Blaster, but Kroil is supposed to be 100x better. They say it can flow into 1/1,000,000" spaces.

Also, I say Go for It. What have you got to lose? If it strips out, you are no worst off than if you had never done it in the first place.

So i took the cover off...which it doesnt look like the shop actually did since the cover bolts were lightly rusted on....

The valve screws themselves actually werent rusted at all. Hard to tell from the pic with the flash, but the left valve screw (in the pic) actually had a layer of paint over the bolt edges. This quickly scraped off and I was able to turn that one with a 5mm allen socket. Turned really easy after a little PBlaster.

The OTHER one (right side) is mangled, and apparently was the one the shop had trouble with. It is stripped, the 5mm allen socket doesnt come close to fitting, just spins with no purchase. Ive soaked them both in penetrant and am going to try to tackle the stripped one tomorrow. Planning on hammering in a one-size-up (6mm if its enough) allen socket in and trying that.

Was pretty disappointed with the shop after the first one i tried turned so easily and clearly hadnt been touched since it still had the paint around the edge...makes me think that the other was probably fine before the shop started messing with it.

Hoping i can get the other one loose tomorrow.

Trying photo again...

Instead of another allen bit, you might want to try hammering in an appropriately sized Torx bit. It would probably be easier to hammer in further than an allen bit, and would allow more purchase area to avoid further stripping.

Just a thought.

It's great news you only have to deal with one and not both.

HTH

Good tip...ill try the torx bit instead. Have a bunch here, so should have something that will work.

Not sure how much room you have and/or if you have access to a welder but tacking on the allen may work.

Edit: Or clean the area fully, slather some JB weld on there and tap in the torx. Be carefully not to JB weld the valve completely.

Heh. I was JUST about to suggest a torx bit and then saw your post. Seems it might bit/cut in a bit more and possibly grab more and with more "teeth" than just a bloated allen.

Torx strip easily if you apply too much pressure. Just a word of caution. Been there done that.

Can you cut a slot with an angle grinder and then back it out with a large flat-head screwdriver?

Great! Now I'm worried about my 14' having this problem. How do they continue building these year after year and not address this problem?

Wondering if a light coat of rustoleum spray paint might protect it... Also wondering why in HECK Toyota did not either use rust free materials there, or protect them some other way...

I tried this with no luck.

Your 2014 should still be covered under warranty.

Question for you guys who are able to back out your KDSS valves. Is the bolt threaded on the end that protrudes past the body of the valve?

I'm thinking the threads on the bolt itself are somewhere inside the accumulator and maybe the rust is has fused the outside of the bolt to the accumulator body.

Do any of you know if it's threaded ?

I just ordered Kroil from their website. There is a special offer going on now called the "risk free trial". Essentially you get a free can of whatever type of Kroil you would like when you purchase another can (of the same or different kind). I had no idea they had so many variants.
I ordered the SiliKroil (which is Kroil and Silicone) and am getting an AeroKroil can for free (which is the original penetrant).

I can't wait to try it out. The products have fantastic reviews.

When working in the aviation industry we used "Free all" $10 a can, but is made with unicorn tears and smurf sweat. hammered on bolts for hours, sprayed free all waited a little while :beer: then the offending bolt came off like a gremlin had loosened it and put it back on just enough it didn't fall off.

another thought, if the threads are internal, can you try wire brush/ sander to remove the top layer of material from the plug and housing, then use the penetrating oil?
