I have a 88 troopie, auzzie import … I’ve just driven the car for the first time due to paperwork / number plate issues. I never thought it would be quick and maybe I’m not hard enough on the gas, but I struggled to get to 90kms and recon on the flat with the wind behind me would just make 100kms.. is this quite normal – The engines in great shape, no worrying noises, the only change is the PO fitted 15” wheels, clearly this will have an effect, as much as 10 kmph ? I also need to check the accelerator cable is able to fully open the throttle.

What sort of consumption should I expect ? a 1000km drive will be a massive undertaking at these speeds..

On a positive note, I still love it …

Cheers
Matt

Hey mate

Firstly you have your self a HJ75 there not a HZJ, HZJ models run the later 1HZ (4.2L) diesel, and didn't start untill the 1990's.
I have a 1985 HJ75 with the 2H with 455,XXXkms on the clock, she will do 120kph with a push, but engine temperature starts getting up there.
It will quite happily sit on 100kph though and running anything up to say about a 33" tyre will not effect the speed dramticly (certainly not 10kph).
With daily driving (to and from work) occational trips to mates house/across town and once/twice a month seeing some of the harder tracks it averages about 400-450km's to a 60LTR tank (also depends on how lead footed Im feeling)
It definatly not what you would call a tourer, much better options out there, but for a rig that'll go just about anywhere I put it (and that's before the 2" and rear locker I've got waiting in the shed) and is tough as nails, simple and more reliable than just about anything ever, it fits the bill nicely :)

Be thankful you are not running a "H" diesel. I only dream of that level of road speed. .................1978HJ45

Steve, thanks for the comments, I'll try and get the model number correct next time :) ...

I also plan on changing the wheels back to 16” rims see if that improves something.

In the meantime I’ll just sit back and enjoy the world at a new speed…and stand on the gas more....

Cheers
Matt

Goodwood,

Can I also suggest perhaps pulling out the injectors and getting them serviced if not done recently, or if funds/time don't permit run some good injector cleaners through the system.

Considering that I can maintain 100-110 km/h in both my HJ 45 and HJ 47s, both without turbos, I have to wonder if there's something wrong with your vehicle. 1000 kms is nothing if the vehicle is in decent shape.

ummm, 445K on th eclock?
did you do a compression test yet?
a 2H will move the truck comfortably at 110 k/h but fuel economy will suffer somewhat.
at 90 k/h, NOT climbing hills, NOT bucking a head wind then you should be between 12L/100 and 10L/100
IF you have decent compression.
IF you have stock tire size.
IF the clutch isn't slipping.
IF IF IF.

remember you are driving a brick on wheels...

(EDIT: This is not correct...They come with 15" wheels as standard, not 16". SIMON WAS WRONG!!!)

The size of the wheel (15/16") has got nothing at all to do with the gearing of the truck, it is the size of the tyre on the wheel that affects the gearing (unless you are running them without tyres on).

Arnt that STD split rims 16s ?

The 2h motor in a troopy = slow but cruisin don't be shy to turbo it to make the driving that bit more easy and less heavy footed

Yes, sorry, my mistake, standard is 16 inch.

But, wheel size still doesn't make any differenece, it is the outside diameter of the tyre that changes gearing.

Just changing from 15 inch to 16 inch doesn't mean much, you have to know what the outside diameter of the tyre is, and compare that to the outside diameter of the standard tyre, to work out how the overall gearing has been changed from standard.

tis true, tis true. stock tire size were 29" tall outside. but most Cruisers look better, perform better and actually get better fuel mileage with 31s...

Not so sure about that crushers, but you no doubt have much more experience with different 70 series cruiser models than I do.

It seems that standard tyre and wheel sizes differ depending on the particular model and original destination market for each model.

From the following table out of the US/Canada Land Cruiser Body/Chassis Repair Manual for heavy duty models between 10/84 and 1/90, it is unclear exatly what size tyres were standard on the Aussie HJ75, but it lists the Aussie FJ75 as coming with 7.50R16 tyres as standard, which seem to be a little under 32 inches diameter (depending on exact tyre manufacturer/model)...

...not sure if the Aussie HJ75 had 7.50R16 tyres as standard, and whether they were approx. 32 inches in size, as different tyre size calculators give different results.

My HZJ78 Troopy came with 7.50R16 tyres as standard, and they are listed as 812mm (31.96 inches) diameter in the Aussie rego specification books that they base our rego rules on.

2h no power house but go for ever . 600,000k and their getting fairly tired. You may have to open the pump a bit, but if she starts blowing to much smoke turn it back. 1/3 of a turn at a time. But check your injectors first. They will wash the side of a piston if the injectors are to bad. I look after [and 10 1HZ] and 2 2Hs that have 450k and that are in hire cars that work on Fraser island. They do 3 day toures and use about 5 leters more fuel than a 1hz in that time. Not as fast on the hiway but in the sand on freser the 2h is much better because all their power is down low, pulls like a tractor. 1HZs torque is a lot higher.

Very interesting

7.50-16 31.45 8.20 but when i take a tape to the actual tire inflated it comes in at just over the 29" tall. hence my earlier post. not saying right or wrong, just what the tape reads.

disagree, i have driven the 2H and the 1HZ and d the1HZz "feels" like better torque down low.
here are the actual numbers:
2H
Max HP 105PS at 3500 rpm
Max torque 25.5 @ 2200 rpm

1HZ
Max HP 135PS at 3600 rpm
Max torque 28.5 @ 2000 rpm

interesting...

My 7.50R16 tyres are only a smidge smaller in diameter than the maxxis 33x12.5.15s that I also have, so there you go.:)

Mate
you are the landcruiser paper fact sheet king,

Although my 2H is in a 60 i get to 100 fine, slow but fine. I also see 10ltrs per 100 all day everyday no matter what i drive.

One thing you haven't mentioned is where you are. If your on the coast or in the mountains. Altitude would play a part.

Oh and some sort of injector cleaner wouldn't hurt

2H
Max HP 105PS at 3500 rpm
Max torque 25.5 @ 2200 rpm

1HZ
Max HP 105PS at 3600 rpm
Max torque 28.5 @ 2000 rpm

Think those 1HZ numbers are incorrect. More like:

96 kW @ 3800rpm
285Nm @ 2200rpm
