When a project goes on the grey mat, it usually means it's coming apart. As much as I can't stand the red color, it actually looks pretty good.

Flares and roof rack off....I have always loved this look. For a while, I was going to fill them in and bed line the truck but I didn't feel right about doing that to such a straight truck. Then I thought I'd send it out for paint but that didn't seem like the smartest financial decision. Proper paint jobs by guys that know what they are doing(and I have one of the best guys) are big bucks these days. We have an old E36 M3 out at paint now...$12k for a full paint job with all new exterior rubber and gaskets. Ouch.

Easy truck to take apart...

This is what we normally take apart. Slightly more challenging then taking apart an 80.

Haha!! When you look at any of your other projects a $13k paint job like I did on my truck is literally drops in the ocean.

For real! The gloss black roof on that Ferrari was a $15k option from Ferrari. $15k to paint the roof a different color! Lol. I guess $15k on a $320k car isn't really that big of a deal.

I had a little rust around one of my rear spoiler bolts. Not a huge deal....treated it with some Chassis Saver paint, then bondo, primer, etc. Pretty impressed with myself....no matter how hard I try to make things nice and smooth....I can never do it. These are virtually invisible.

All patched and primed.....

Since my roof and my hood were losing their clear coat, I sanded them down with 600 grit after filling in the roof rack holes with JB Weld. I was going to weld them but dropping the headliner didn't seem like a fun way to spend my day. There's a reason why JB Weld will be just fine....that's coming up.

Fancy drone shot. You can see how where the cross braces from the roof rack didn't fade as much as the rest of the roof. Stupid roof rack.

I seem to recall spending one of my Xmas weeks doing all the door gaskets, window felts and seals on the truck...while I had it apart, I did a stereo in the truck.....double DIN with the speakers that everyone seems to use...Kenwood or Sony...can't recall which ones. Allowed us to keep the stock speaker grilles which was really important to me. We've had a few of these trucks come in with spacers and aftermarkets grilles...not my cup of tea. I'm by no means a stereo guy...if I have a speaker and my bluetooth connects, I'm as happy as can be.

IF you go down the road of new speakers...do yourself a HUGE favor and dynomat those doors. Use it inside on the door skin and then make a vapor barrier out of the stuff. This truck sounds amazing and the decrease in road noise is substantial. Sounds like an armored car.

Buy new door panel clips too....you can get them on Amazon.

What year is your rig? Can you post the link for the clips? Amazon has a variety of them, and some claim they won't fit my '91. I really would not want to succumb to the dealer.

Any idea where I might find a tutorial on taking the door handle pulls (exterior) off? I want to repaint mine.

Door handles are super easy to take apart. If you can get them out of the door, you can disassemble them. We had them sprayed in a satin black. Painter broke one of the handles which meant I had to buy a new one. Then have it painted. And it didn't match the rest of the stuff so I had to pull the other one on that side and have them both sprayed. Very hard to duplicate satin/matte finishes.

Those handles look cherry!

Had to shift over to prep our 79 series for a trip up to the 4th annual 70 series meet and greet in Windrock TN.....back on track with the 80 series.

So the body was stripped, holes filled, dings removed, trim off, etc.....reason being, I decided to go with a wrap on this one. We do a lot of customer cars in vinyl so I figured why not do the 80. If nothing else, it will hold me over for a while until I decide what color I would paint it. If i ever paint it.

Stripped down, cleaned, ready to go......fancy pic.

Went with 3Ms Matte Brown Metallic for this truck. I've done a few cars in this color....looks really cool. Lots of gold metallic in the paint. Kind of looks period correct and it goes with the tan interior.

We had previously installed the Smittybilt 12k winch and Dobinsons mounting plates for the bullbar. Had to make a custom bracket to relocate the control box for the winch. This one has a wireless feature so I didn't need to relocate it under the hood.

Because my base color was burgundy, wrapping this truck needed a lot more work than most wraps we do. I didn't want to do door jambs and all that stuff so we kind of cheated those areas.

Cowl vent area took some additional work with black paint. Didn't want to have my vinyl guy spend a bunch of time wrapping the vent....so we blacked it out.

Not a very complex body on these trucks so the wrap went pretty quick.
