So, the event for July is a mild "expedition style" wheeling trip to Hurricane Creek. In Western NC close to Asheville. A lot of us have done sections of this trek before, but it's been a while since the last one.

So, this trip we'll try to string together a series of Forest Roads, and stay off the main roads as long as possible to try and get the expedition experience. Campsites might be on the side of a forest road, and not specific campsites (especially not ones with bathrooms and showers).

Here's some examples of other's trips:

I know NCFJ Cruisers just went out a few weeks ago, also.

The area is known for local encounters with landowners about land use and staying on the marked trail, so to offset the negatives I'd like to make it a point to pack out some trash, and map some areas for future public knowledge of the area. Make it a point to put our Tread Lightly status into use.

This would also be a small group trip, limited to 7 trucks.

1. GarnerFJ40
2. FJinTegaCay
3. JohnVee
4. Forrest5000
5. JFZ80
6. mtnbike28
7. jrmudder84

Planning will be ongoing, and I think it should be a point to try and make this as authentic as possible. So, let's see if we can pack all food and fuel, and not make a store stop all weekend.

Wouldn't do it without you! Adam however... :)

I'm not putting any maybes on the list. Only confirmed attendees, as this will be a limited number of trucks.

Another video:

7:28 gets good and such a great view from Buzzard's Roost around 9 minutes

I've been to HC twice and have gotten semi-lost out there twice, I think that's part of its charm. Lots of side trails and mystery turns that dead-end. I've never seen any of the gates unlocked that would lead to the top of the mountain though. Straight through you could probably be in/out in 1.5-2hrs. Nice camping spot about 1/2 way in.

Where else do you plan on this expedition stopping?

Link no workey on mobile. I did find a video of some fj cruisers not treading lightly. Doh!

I would love to commit but the problem for me is that I only have one truck right now. My landscape crew uses it during the season. So I have no way to tow the crockpot there. Hmmmm

fat hands

Wellers (well, at least one truck) IN!

I wish it was another weekend. I leave for a trip to Colorado in the middle of the next week. Will have to be prepping my RV and rig for that trip.

Max Patch is a definite stop, but I've got to call a guy associated with Appalachian 4x4 club, who's going to give me some details on some other areas to check out. He's let me know that some of the locals are upset with the way recent visits to Hurricane Creek have been, so we're going to Tread Lightly, have some extensive maps of the area and do some clean up as we go.

Wasn't planning on making a thread for this for another month when I had a concrete plan down for it. But its up now and looks like its almost full.

I would be interested in going....

Definitely free this weekend, but I don't think I can swing this trip then CMCC the next weekend.

Can I get added to the list? Looks like a great trip! What time are folks trying to meet Friday?

Yes you can! Since it's still in the planning phase, I'm shooting for everyone leaving their area Friday morning and then meeting up somewhere around lunchtime. If I can plan a full two days of driving then we might start earlier... I'll keep everyone informed of times...

But the planned route will be revealed the day of the trip.:D

And the last spot is taken!

Trip is closed unless someone drops out. I'll keep everyone informed as more information is available...

Hurricane Creek has been bulldozed!

I was up in Asheville this past weekend and decided to visit HC while in the area, boy was I up for a rude awakening! Looks like the forest service has had enough of people driving on their road and making side trails. Any and all rocks/obstructions on the trail have been smoothed over. All the side trails, mud pits, hill climb are now inaccessible.

Well, that sucks a big one!!!

Thanks for the 411 - at least a bunch of us didn't waste fuel and time going up there to find out for ourselves. All the more reason I'm putting more money towards dual purpose on Dozer instead of rock crawler. More and more systems closing left and right - if URE closes (God forbid), it'll be about 6hr+ tow anytime I want to wheel.

Boooo!
