yeah...got alot torn off. now im scratching my head on what areas to bondo and what areas need to be cut out and replaced......doing the math on buying some body panels from CCOT now and it makes me want to vomit...should have left the rear diamond plate on, but oh well.....it's done and now I can't put it back (I could I just am to much of a purist to do it!!)

Josh my intentions were to buy a new tub, than I woke up and remembered I had absolutely no time or mechanical skills to do the job! I was basing that just on the floor pan on driver side and kick panels. Now that all that other has surfaced, have you given any thought about finding tub in better condition?
I knew the drive train is in great condition but looking at your pics making me feel like crap!!
Look Paul Pilgrims way for some of that metal.
Your number of posts and progress continues to amaze me!! Keep up good work

I think the tub is salvageable. I have a buddy I Work with who has agreed to do the welding. So I can cut out the bad stuff, buy CCOT replacement parts to match and we can get it all replaced.

I may redo the math and if it's ridiculous I may look at a new tub, but i don't want to go that route.

Dont worry John....you were honest with the rust your knew about and sent lots of pictures...it's always a toss up when you pull off diamond plate...atleast there is some metal behind it!!

Thanks for the encouragement.......I think.....hehehe..I tend to either post alot or do alot, but never both.

Now we're talkin!

Lenny dont EVER suggest hacking up my baby like that again.....I AM NOT going to turn her into a buggy.........honestly....admit it you just want to go to town with a blue wrench for the heck of it:grinpimp:

If You catch the bug, you will wish you went that route from the beginning. It's gonna cost the same. But it will cost you more If you start to restore it then decide you want to do more with your 40. You need to go on a few trail rides, first, to truly see what you like before you get heavy into restoring it. May be a good candidate for replacing tub vs. Rebuilding the one you got.

mmmmm maybe....more than likely if I liked rock I would get an 80....I am pretty set on getting this truck to DD status and having it look/run/function in a fairly stock manner.....I dont want a $3k paint job and a frame I can shave off of, but we will see about a tub replacement once I get it fully cleaned up and can see where all I have rust.

took the :princess: riding yesterday to look at Madison real estate.....ended up on your street.....if your neighbors to your right as you pull in your drive move...let me know:D I also tried to talk her into building and showed her your shop door....:grinpimp::grinpimp:

FYI the two story next to that, the one with the pontoon boat in the driveway has been up for sale for awhile.

Sheila, my wife, is a real estate agent if you need any help.

Agreed. Cut it up and wheel the hell out of it. If thats not your cup of tea buy an aqualu tub and dump an excessive amount of money in it. Either way have fun.

dont know bout the aqualu tub but im workin on the excessive amount of money now

yeah I know.....the problem is im all ready looking at a new drivers floor, rear sill, new quarters or just a new tub all together......and then I want to paint it all.....

THAT is all before getting to a winch, suspension, rebuilding the front end.....all mo betta

I realize some of the guys have had 15 trucks and spent literally 10s of thousands, but I all ready see the money pit and im only 6 months into owning it

Don't lose faith. You don't have to fix everything right now. You have a bunch of knowledge here within the club that have done a lot of the work you mention. Get the parts and ask for some help. Front end work, suspension (thought you had a lift already?), we'll help ya out. Get the truck dependable/drivable and you can fix stuff along the way.

Holla!

oh im not losing faith ....just money.....I may rust bullet the inside fix the drivers floor pan and quarters...so I can paint and drive it....and wait on the rear sill. front end needs a rebuild and yeah it has a lift but the shocks are about through IMO....but that's down the list anyway.

Got a buddy to help me weld so I am budgeting for a piece at a time to get the metal all good.

What Bodean said.

I have a 14" x 6" hole where my rear floor meets the sill. It had a thin piece of plywood over it when I got it in 2003. The rust was treated with converter and painted to stop or slow the progress. The plywood was removed in mid 2010 when I built the storage drawers in the back. That big hole and a number of small ones along the edge where the fender meets the floor are all still there. I will replace the rear sill, floor, and patch the other holes some day, but I'm having too much fun driving it right now!

With a LOT of great guidance from CLC members, I went with this progression:
Safety & Performance: Get it stopping, steering, and running good
Maintenance: fluids, knuckles, etc
Enjoy driving it!
Upgrades based on your driving experience, intended use, and preferences

40s are fun to drive no matter how they look or even how they smell! Get it going, turning, and stopping and let the fun begin.

Amen Lash!!!

Everybody can't have a "pretty" truck! LOL!!!

outstanding advice....but I have it apart so ill do the floor under my feet at the least, but my intent is to have it back together and running for warm weather (a month hopefully) and my next project after this RB and putting it together is a knuckle job....probably a day drinking beer at Lennys for wrenching?

but I got you loud and clear and I am all ready having the urge to drive as it's 60 + outside now:bounce:

Everybody can't have a "pretty" truck! LOL!!!
is that a CHALLENGE LOL!!!

Another thing I did was to buy a 1/4" thick truck bed mat for right around $90. It was a "custom cut" version with no wheel wells cut out and it was somewhere around 8' x 5'. I have used it to cut out floor mats in the front and a cover for the storage drawers in the rear. I still need to cut a piece for right behind the front seats and under the drivers seat. The mats have helped to protect and hide the metal floors. They have also reduced the amount of heat in the cab. Can't remember if I got it a Ricks Pro Truck or Big 10. Shop around for the biggest mat at the best price.
