I have added this topic to our breakfast in Oct. Dennis (aka Tank5), are you going to be at the next breakfast?

I will be there tomorrow.

Sorry I have not followed up since the last meeting. I will get some pictures up tonight of the vehicles to be removed, so we can see them for discussion.

This explorer is off of forest road 4 and is about half a mile from pavement. It is one of the easier vehicles to remove.

This is the second vehicle located off of 4b. It is the vehicle that will be the hardest to recover if we can. It down slope 100 feet or so.

This is the third vehicle. It is located on a closed spur road off the end of forest service road 106, aka Thompson Ridge. It is about 1.5 miles from start of the spur road.

Last time I talked with the Jemez DR all we need to do is pick a date and start coordinating from there. Maybe we can try to do that Saturday at the club meeting.

@Tank5, didn't you say this morning that you had a date in mind? If so, post it and I'll edit the title to include it.

The discussed date to propose for clean up is Saturday November 2nd after the cowboy breakfast. If you cannot make the cowboy breakfast but want to help with the clean we will be happy to have, so no worries. I will get a start time for the clean up posted as soon as we determine what it will be.

Those who wish to participate should bring any recovery gear they have.

I have one trailer we can use to haul a car on, I think we need at least one other car hauler.

The tentative plan would be to divide ourselves into two teams and try to remove the two easiest vehicles first. If there is not enough participants we may only go after one vehicle at a time.

I will start coordinating with the Forest Service to get things lined up.

More to come as we start thinking through it.

I am planning on being there for breakfast and am looking forward to the challenge of this clean up.

Is the plan still to try to remove the vehicles whole? Will we need tires and wheels?

Yes the plan is still to try and remove them whole. I need to go and confirm the vehicle year to determine the bolt pattern. When I know that I will share to see if anyone has any ideas for obtaining some roller wheels.

I can dismount/mount tires in the field if needed. I am sure we have plenty of people with air available. If the wheels are in decent shape we can easily get by with tires that will hold air and fit the wheels.

Sounds like another training/learning opportunity

Yep. It is something that comes in handy when you cant get to a tire machine. Twelve bucks worth of Harbor Freight bars, some soapy water and a 4x4 piece of wood about 4 feet long is all it takes (and maybe a little bit of ether to make it fun).

Is this road open to 4x4? I like hot springin’ via this route but I thought it was closed.

The spur road above San Antonio hot springs is closed but the Forest Service is giving us permission to drive in for the removal.

Putting this on the calendar. Would like to help out even if it means staying out of the way.

So this is scheduled to happen this Saturday. Are we ready?

I am planning on bringing:

Chain saw
Tire bead breaker
Tire spoons
Log chain
Straps and chokers
Various hand tools.

Anything else we need that I might have?

Any idea what size wheels are on the vehicles. I may have tires too.

We are still planning this for this Saturday. I will get gps coordinates and tire size tonight.

I will have more info. Tonight.
