I am still waiting for response from the District Ranger about access to the area. Just looking at my own schedule, I am looking at weekends in late October (after the Balloon Fiesta) and early November but before November 16th.

I will update and pick dates as soon as I hear back from the Forest Service.

Any idea what we are going to do here? I'm inclined to unstick this thread.

I will post up a date later today and we can see if there is enough interest. If not then yes unstick it.

I appreciate everyone that has continued to express interest in this project. I have had a hectic schedule this year and honestly this has been a low priority for me. I would still like to see it completed and the soonest I have time to make this happen is the weekend of November 12-13. Veterans day is the 11th and I expect many you may already have plans for this weekend. I personally think we need a at least 4-5 members and 2-3 winch trucks to make this work. Who of you are still interested and available on November 12-13 to do this?

The area we will be in is behind a locked gate, so we should have the area to ourselves even on the holiday weekend.

I also wanted to offer to pass this project to anyone else that wants to organize it for another date that I am not available if we don't have enough interest for November 12-13. If someone else wants run with I will share my contacts and such with them.

Something else to consider is combining this with the 11 (holiday) and plan a longer event and maybe add trail runs/exploration in the Jemez.

Moving forward keep in Mind it is possible we could have some snow up hear which could alter the plan.

Thanks! I can fill one winch truck spot if needed, though my crawler is pretty light.
I can make any time that weekend/Friday work

I can do that weekend.

I talked with the USFS today and they are still trying to find a place that will take the two vehicles we pulled out prior and the one we would be removing. He said today that he is not keen on pulling out another without a place to dispose of them. I told him I want to make a decision on this project by November 1st and he said would get back to me before then. I will update this thread promptly as I hear back from him, so you all can make other plans for the weekend if this project busts.

@Mauser suggested a company that might pickup the vehicles but I was unable to identify that company through my searches. If anyone knows of a place that will collect untitled vehicles please let me know.

@krazykat69 is Dugger still with NM4W? Possible to ask him if he knows a yard up there that would accept them?
I have a friend here that runs a yard here but too expensive for him to haul them down from up there.
@5speed addict same question do you know a yard in Los Alamos that would do an impound?

I found an email address for Strong House this morning and have emailed them for info.

Here is a link to their facebook page

I don't know anything about Dugger any more. Not in the club anymore, that I know of. I wonder if there is some place in Cuba that might take the vehicle.

The USFS said they had reached to various yards and services and the basic reasons no one has expressed interest is because no title or the job is not worth their time.

I spoke to him about having the USFS LEO have the vehicles towed/impounded as abandoned property that could be claimed by the tow company if no one claims the vehicle. He is going to look into this option.

There is a yard in Los Alamos that I am aware of that would collect these for what they are.

@Mauser thanks for reaching out to Strong House, I was unable to make contact with them. Let me know if they respond back.

I going to make a few calls to see what I can come up with.

Well, I not sure how much time the USFS spent looking for disposal option but the first call I made to a scrap yard was productive. They will take them if we provide them the vin, so they can run run it to see if it has lien or is reported stolen. If it comes back without any hits then they can take them. I will send them the Vin’s and see where we go from there.

If they come back with a vin or as stolen then they need to be claimed by another entity and is something the USFS LEO will have to sort out.

I let you know which way they go.

Good work Dennis 👏

Not sure if there’s any tow yards up here these days, most tow companies that I’ve seen working up here operate from the surrounding areas.

I have not heard back from the Forest Service. I will call them tomorrow to figure out what they want to do with it. I will give and update either way no later than the 1st.

I talked to the USFS today and we are good to go. The project is moving forward.

First question. Do you all want to start on the Friday the 11th or Saturday the 12th?

I have permission for those involved to camp behind the gate.

Here is the plan at the moment. After picking out our start day we will meet on Forest Service Road 4B (I will share map or location pin here before we start) and head in behind the gate and set up camp. Then go scope out the project as a team and identify roles for everyone participating in the recovery. We could start working that night or get started early in the morning.

Equipment: Straps, shackles, winch line dampener, hilift jack or other jacks, gloves, safety glasses, a chain saw (I will have one) and anything else you feel would help with this recovery. I will bring a car trailer for hauling it to their yard.

Goals for this job,
  1. Safety - I don't want anyone to get hurt or damage their rig. There is no pressure to get this thing out, so we don't need to take any uncalculated risks.
  2. Practice our recovery skills - I see this as an opportunity to practice and share our recovery skills as well get more familiar with gear some of us don't use as often as others.
  3. If 1 and 2 go well then hopefully we are having fun will get the junk vehicle removed and clean up the forest a little.
To take stock of who is still coming please respond with your preferred start day 11 or 12. If not everyone can make the 11 work then we will start on the 12.

Thank you for all your efforts on this @Tank5 !
You guys handled that last recovery really well, and that 80 slid off in the snow. I am happy to assist if that core crew is short handed.
I have most all of the gear listed; my crawler is pretty light so may not have weight enough. It is pretty nimble though.
I can make either or both dates work, camping might be an issue

I'd like to make it out for the day but let me firm up some things at my end. Good work Dennis.
