I have a meeting with the USFS to discuss the plan next week. I believe I will need to push this back to the weekend of May 28-29 but I want wait to confirm that until after our meeting.
It is possible the second dates won’t work either. I will sort it and post the new dates, so maybe it will work for everyone.I can't go that weekend.
The meeting went well. The Forest Service is happy to have our help in removing the vehicle. The weekend dates need to change. I would like to propose the following dates to move it to May 28-29 or June 4-5. I would like to hear from those interested if one of those weekends works better for you. I will look and see if there is a way to add pole to the first thread to let everyone vote on dates.
The Forest Service went in and improved the road last year so access is easier and we might even be able to get the trailer all the way to the camp area, so we don’t have to drag the car too far.
The only possible concerns at this point would be fire restrictions depending on moisture and weather conditions. They might not be a deal breaker but we may need to make adjustments to our tools or plan to mitigate concerns. That is all condition based and we will know more as the time gets closer.
The plan would still be to camp over night near the recovery site to give us more time to accomplish the task and hang out near the rim with friends.
The recovered vehicle would be trailered and dropped off at the Forest Service tow yard.
Does anyone know a wrecker service that would be willing to tow away the three recovered vehicles (2 last year- 1 this) from the Forest Service yard. The Forest Service has been unsuccessful at scrapping the vehicles because they don’t have a title. I was thinking a tow service could tow them and then apply for a title if not claimed, so they could the dispose of the vehicle. Other ideas welcome.
Anyone have any questions?
As the OP you should be able to edit and add a pole. If not, let me know.I will look and see if there is a way to add pole to the first thread to let everyone vote on dates.
I didn’t know June 4th was National trails clean up day. Sounds like a fitting day for this project to take place. We would take the help no matter what day it is.June 4th is National Trails Clean Up Day . I had planned on leading a clean up Detail into the Jemez Mts that day. I Posted up as a leader of this group on the New Mexico 4 Wheelers website. That group could bring some extra help to your Clean Up plans, if you needed us. We were just planning on driving around in the Jemez and picking up any trash we found, that day. After I lead this group out of the Jemez, I would like to come back to your overnight campsite and help on June 5th, Sunday, too.
Where is this junk car you want to remove? Are you going to trailer it out of the area to the Forest Service yard? I did not make your last year's project.
Thanks for setting this up.
I also agree with Virgil. This is not going to be an easy extraction.I don't want to sound like a jerk but I don't think a lot of people here would be a good thing.
I agree Virgil, I think we will limit the number of folks involved in the vehicle removal. I believe early on I thought we needed 4-6 members with vehicles to pull this out. I think of others want to come to the camp and hang back would be ok.I don't want to sound like a jerk but I don't think a lot of people here would be a good thing.
This is going to be pretty dangerous job. Too many people and someone will get hurt. We also don't need a lot of people standing around. Me personally, I want to at least have some sort of clue about who I am working with. Like I said, this job will be dangerous, I promise to watch your back, but I gotta know you are also watching mine.
Getting this car out is going to be a lot of work and thinking on the fly. It is work that will just need to get done. What we need mostly will be good, hard workers, but also some good thinkers.
These are just my thoughts.
I agree with you all about this job. I am committed to leading the ride on June 4th and would like to camp out on Sat with anybody who is staying there overnight.I agree Virgil, I think we will limit the number of folks involved in the vehicle removal. I believe early on I thought we needed 4-6 members with vehicles to pull this out. I think of others want to come to the camp and hang back would be ok.
I do agree that we should minimize the size of the working group for removing the vehicle. What we are doing is not risk free and that is important for everyone to know.
The area we will be working in is behind a closed and locked gate. I will have access for our group to get through the gate and to the project site. The project site is about 2.5-3 miles from the gate, so I expect we will have a decent buffer from the larger recreational crowd on either weekend.FYI May 28-29 is Memorial Day Weekend. More campers everywhere.
