Mal and I will make it! No tree permit necessary.

Maudie and I will join in, no tree permit needed.

I'm a definite maybe for this one. I'm in discussions with the Mrs. as to what kind of tree we're after and where we want to go.

Here let me fix that. You ARE going with us. Yup, that's solved. You're welcome. :flipoff2:

Ya, and with child. Tree, you are getting a Douglas fir or a white fir. There, that was easy.

Disclaimer: I'm single (I hate the "W" word).

How's the snow forecast looking for this years iteration of an always infamous ride?
Meh. One possibility next weekend.

The tree run is usually a letdown for snow.

My wife and I may be in for this if you all don't mind some newbies. My son may chime in as well if he finds out that he can make it out with his 4runner. We'll grab our permit in town before heading out. Looking forward to meeting some of you.

Please join us! Looking forward to meeting you and your family!

Some details regarding the ride and some options:

Lets meet at Walatowa at 9:30 and then we can go to La Cueva and meet with people coming from the north at 10:30 at the store on the corner.

WE GOT SNOW! There's presently 3-4" as of this morning above La Cueva; potentially more this Sunday!

We'll expect snow, ice and mud.
My friend with the Ranger district said the best trees are on 144 (we can cut anywhere on USFS land, however). As many of you know, the road can get a little more adventurous after the tree cutting area. We will discuss area specifics that morning.

FESTIVITIES in JEMEZ SPRINGS
After the ride, don't forget the Lights Among the Ruins in the village; thousands of faralitos adorn the ruins, there will be bonfires and pueblo dancers. If you haven't been to it, or have out of town visitors, its really pretty neat. Due to growing popularity, they are attempting to control the masses by selling tickets ahead of time for entry every half hour (you can stay in longer than 30 minutes if you like); tickets will need to be purchased in advance here ($10pp, $5.00 for kids).
HoldMyTicket - Ticketed Events Nearby

I suspect that we should be back in time for those that want to get in for the 5:30 slots. I just tried buying 10 tickets for the 5:30, 6 and 6:30 and they seem to have availability as of now.

APRES-RIDE:
If anyone wants to grab a bite and a beverage, we could either head to our place (couple minute walk from the village square) and do a potluck of sorts and we could put something quick on the smoker, like chicken or brats or we could go to Los Ojos or the new 2nd Alarm Brewery (finally pouring beer). Until 4 they will have their normal menu (quite good) and after 4 will go to a Christmas menu of homemade posole, tamales, green chile stew, and anything on the menu that would hit the fryer (they're trying to avoid the 2 hour delays Los Ojos sometimes gets with big crowds).

TREE PERMITS:
If you want a tree permit, you can get them that day at the Walatowa Visitor center by the gas station if you are coming from the south. If from the north, they will need to be obtained during the work week in Los Alamos, Espanola, Santa Fe or Cuba ranger stations. Or I can pick them up at the Jemez station since it's close to my house for you; let me know if you need one.

I posted a poll with some options for lunch or after the ride.
Pipe up with any suggestions!

  • That's a lot of choices and thanks@Manona for organizing. We'll either have an old pupper in tow or have to head home to him, so won't be able to hang around after the run. Maybe a spring time Jemez booze cruise would be good, with DDs of course!

That sounds like a great idea!

Hi Cheryl - thanks so much for all your organization and logistics on the day!

Evan here - I met you on that SAR mission at Battleship Rock a few months ago. I am hoping to get out on the run, but I am waiting to hear whether or not I have a search and rescue commitment that day. If I am free, I will plan on the run, but will likely have to head back to town after that.

If I am not able to make it up this weekend, hopefully we will have a few more snow runs this year. The storm track seems to be cooperating so far this season.

Thanks again for all your help!

I remember the luxury of independent decision making. Had some chats with the family and everyone is on board with taking a ride next weekend. I gave my daughter the OK to pick the tree, so that takes the pressure off me to find a prime specimen.

We'll grab our permit at the visitor center on the way.

BTW, voted for BYO lunch in the field and will head home after the ride/tree cutting to set up and decorate.

I'll be there with my 12 yo daughter and a sled. I'll bring an extra helmet for kids.

Hey Evan! It'd be great to have you along. Looks like we will get more snow day before and it's been cold enough that stuff from this past weekend hasn't melted off, so let's hope you'll be free. I think the majority of forest roads close Jan 1.

Snow's in the forecast; a couple inches Thursday night/Friday; also the 4-5" we got this weekend is sticking around as the weather is nice and cold. YAY!!!

A maybe...daughter will be along if mama isn’t to worried.
