Got home this afternoon. Took about an hour, sprayed 2 coats of DCU2021. Went out a few minutes ago and took a few pics. For 27 year old split rims I thought they cleaned up pretty nice?

Hoping to get another batch of steel in the booth again tomorrow night and primed.

They look really nice Matt! However, I am reminded of an expression my grandmother used to use with some frequency: 'you can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t.'

Or, perhaps more on -point; when I was flying dispersal planes in Central America, we had this old Westwind Beech-18 which went back to the corporate base for a complete re-spray. When she came back, she was absolutely stunning to look at in her new livery. All of the pilots were standing around drooling over her when this old, grumpy, frazzled pilot we had who was a retired missionary pilot who flew in Africa for years and years harumphed and said 'same old whore, different dress.'

They are still bloody splittes.:D

Nothing exciting, but more progress. Got a couple hours out in the booth tonight. Hung another batch of blasted parts and primed.

Going to try to run home tomorrow for about 30 minutes and spray some base color on the U-bolts I primed tonight. I could just clear them and leave them black since no one really see's them. But, I have some silver base from spraying glove box doors and speedo heads laying around and I thought that would look better. I know, I'm anal retentive.....:rolleyes:

Then hoping to clear this batch tomorrow night.

Hey Matt, any new posts on this thread is exciting! I love your build threads because you move so fast and there's always something new to see! I know you have some pics on your website, but I often wish there was a build thread like this for your Mustard FJ40 and your plow truck. I'm assuming you pretty much went through the same process of teardown and rebuild as you have done with your others though, so all I need to do is extrapolate...:D

Great work! Dream of having the tools/space/time to do this some day (I know, everyone says that).

Don't believe him: Matt told me he was just going to drive this troopy for a year or two and then 'tinker' with it to make it look nicer.

If this is 'tinker'ing, then I'd say 'move a bit slower' must mean he won't have it together until Saturday.:)

More paint, that's about it. Got home for lunch for and sprayed some silver base on the U bolts. Tonight I sprayed clear on everything. Few pics of the fun...again... :p

Got some stuff going on this weekend, so this batch will get to hang in the booth for a few days. Hoping Sunday night to load up again and spray primer. Thinking 2, maybe 3 more booth full's of parts, hoping I can be done painting for a while the end of next week.

Hey, that was the plan. Drive it for a year or so, and just have some fun!

But, sometimes things change. :D

And when you say Saturday, you mean like next year on Saturday? ;)

Nothing exciting to report, just more paint. I was out of town this last weekend and when I got home Sunday night I hung up the shocks and front stabilizer. I didn't get a pic before when they were bare steel, sorry. If you really want to see them in bare steel I think you can go back a couple pages and see them in one of those green totes in the back of trailer.

Anyway, got a couple coats of DP48LF on them Sunday night. Got back out in the booth tonight and sprayed a couple coats of DCU2021 tonight. Turned out pretty good I think. Not sure if this whole sandblasting shocks and painting them is going to work out anyway. I taped up the shock cylinder pretty good, but you never know if a spec of sand or something is going to blow out a seal or something. Only time will tell and I won't know until next year or so when this thing is back on the road. Worst case scenario is that they leak and I have to get new ones? Although I think they will be fine.

Hoping to get another batch of steel hung tomorrow night and primed!!

Shocks

G'day Matt,

I'm loving the build. If I remember correctly I think your shocks were 'Koni?? I don't know how common they are as a brand in the US, I can't recall seeing them fitted to too many trucks on these forums.

For what it is worth in Australia they enjoy an enviable reputation as probably the best 4WD shock absorber on the market. One of the reasons for this is that they are rebuildable/serviceable, unlike ARB/OME. The price of having a set of Koni shocks rebuilt is actually pretty reasonable and makes the initial purchase price (about twice the cost of OME shocks) a bit more worthwhile.

They are also adjustable. From memory you either fully compress or fully extend the shock and they rotate the bottom half to adjust the dampening.

That is good info to know, thanks! :beer: I know I have heard the name tossed around and for some reason I thought the name was always associated with quality?

They seemed like they were fairly new, there was no rust on them and they weren't to dirty. It seemed a shame to order up newer cheaper shocks just because these were a little used. I only got to drive this rig about 5 miles before I blew it apart, but what little I did it sure rode nice. I pretty much taped off everything that could have been damaged by blasting so I think they should be fine.

Nothing that great to report...just more paint. Hung another batch of steel tonight and got it into DP90 tonight. Not sure if I will get it cleared tomorrow night or not, if not it might be Thursday night. I'm hoping Friday night or Saturday to prime the last batch of bare steel parts for a while....I hope!

Got an email from Aqualu today, and a call later in the day to go over a few last minute things. From my understanding everything is programed into CAD and the plan is to fire up the CNC machine in the next day or so. Hopefully I will have a few more pics in the next few days. :)

Matt, how much paint are you mixing for each batch? I know it's a stupid question, just trying to get an idea how the process works.
