About 2 weeks ago I was hearing an unusual sound from engine and it wasn’t my manifold leak. I had our GM mechanic get his stethoscope and check it out and he determined it was the idler tensioner pulley. I left it parked at work and ordered the idler tensioner assembly along with a new serpentine belt since mine looked like it needed replaced. I called FAT and they gave me a great discount and shipped me the parts, which I received Wednesday. I have been reading up in the 100 forum on how to replace and thought I might tackle this job this weekend. Supposedly a 🍌 job that takes about 1.5 hrs. I was still debating whether to do or let mechanic but decided to drive home tonight. I leave it at work because my driveway isn’t big enough for 5 vehicles.

Well as I pulled in driveway and do my normal turn around to back in, all hell broke loose with screeching and squealing under the hood. I stopped and pulled the hood release and left running and what I saw was the fan slowly turning and then speed up a little, then slow down to a crawl again. I did pull my phone out and did 2 short videos showing the speed and you can hear the squealing and screeching. If anyone would post for me, as I don’t know how to post them and not smart enough to learn how, I will send to you.

Could this be the tensioner locking up on me or something more serious? I could post this in the 100 forum but you guys know I am no Logan when it comes to working on LCs and will overlook my ignorance... I hope. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Probably just the idler pulley fighting its last fight. If I were you, I’d pull the serp off and try spinning all the pullies individually by hand to find the culprit. I’d wager that it’s your idler. I’ve never done the idler on a 100series, so I can’t advise on how many bananas. I can’t imagine that it could be all that tough.

Kenny, the grinding bearings finally seized and now the belt is just sliding over the pulley. happened to me 2 weeks ago. I decided to swap the pulley and not the whole tensioner. works fine now... one hour job, I did remove the skid plate to access from bottom. on my 2003 sequoia with a 2uzfe, so yours may very

In the 100 forum it was said you have some time before the pulley craps out. This one just grenaded on me I guess. Glad I was in my driveway when it happened. Sean I read there is a spring, I think, in the tensioner assembly that has been improved by Toyota and that is why I need to replace the whole assembly, not just the pulley. I thought the belt would grenade too when The pulley locked up but that didn’t happen. I will proceed to replace belt and tensioner assembly but I will check all the pulleys when I remove the belt. Thanks for the advice guys and i will let you know whether it’s a 1 🍌 or 4 🍌for me.

sounds like your tensioner. you can do it!!

A pulley can seize with little or no warning or give quite a bit. As soon. As you get a warning on any pulley change it out.

The oukkey locked up on that blue suburban I had with zero warning and shredded the belt coming back from Carolina beach. Had to swap both on the roadside.

I think it locked up just so I would have to be the one to replace instead of my mechanic. If the rain holds off I plan to start in the morning. Hopefully be done by noon. 🙄🙏🤞

you done yet?

Nope, not yet!

I did come home after work and started before the rain came. It was a slow go but this is what I accomplished.

Old belt is a keeper for a spare.

New tensioner on
The rain came shortly there after. Good thing because I was cussing them timing belt covers. A real PIA lining them up. Also had to take the pulley off the alternator to remove tensioner assembly. Tomorrow I will start reinstalling alternator and hopefully be done in about an hour. I am feeling pretty good that I only lost one bolt in the gravels but found a little later on. I should be done in less than an hour tomorrow if the rain gives me a break.

Good thing about that new tensioner is it has and upgraded spring design and is much larger. I was surprised when I did mine.

Before you put the new belt on quickly check all the other pulleys.

That was what I also read about the tension. Toyota upgrades the spring. All the pulleys were fine and my belt wasn’t that bad.

I was able to button this job up before 9:30 this morning and I am good to go! My FSM was the page I copied from the FAQ write up in the 100 forum. Really helped me out and cut my time down to only....4 hours. I know you guys would have done the job in less than half that time. Now I am ready to tackle speakers since all are blown.

I had a little buddy waiting on me this morning.
