Is this axle twisted? You can see from the snap ring groove out to where the splines die out the twist. Is it time to replace this, or just throw it back in?

What did the birfield look like?

It was in pieces and the bushing on the back of spindle destroyed.

I've got one coming from Mudrak (I think, I'm never 100% sure with Gary until it arrives).

Work Hardened.
That said, no chance in hell id reinstall that.

I’ve got plenty of inner axles around here if you need one

I miss the old sarcastic rolling eye emoji, that way there was no way of mistaking if your kidding or not.

I've given away any loose inner axles I have mainly because I have a rack of full complete axles if I come across this problem. I try to stay clear of any running gear from behind a V8, lockers or huge tires. I do remember I have a three speed that must have been mated to a V8 with the different front bearing retainer it has. But I only took it because someone was going trash. At some point someone will need it and will pass it on.

Off road desert racers use to paint a white line down the length of their axles. They might start a race on an axle that had a up to a quarter twist (90 degree), but anything over that (90 degree up to 180 degree) they would throw into the trailer as a limp home axle they may need just to finish a race. Once when we pitted Mike Falkoski he had broken an axle that had a full 360 degree twist.

Mark is referring to back in the day when I ran custom 35 and 40 spline axels, my axle builder did not have any problem with a twist in the splines. In fact he called it a bit stronger that way.
He was a metallurgist. I just parroted him.

now, the last thing you would want to do given you had same length axles, would be to swap sides. You want the stress going one way.

again, I’d NEVER run that on a toss away Cruiser inner axle but you have to start asking questions when you twist a $400 inner axle shaft
