Is my engine about ready to say goodnight?

Now how do I use it?

You pull all the plugs. Block open the throttle. Do one cylinder at a time, crank at least 3 revolutions, make sure you have a good 12volt supply, the tester should lock at the max pressure until you release it.

I had that same symptom when I fist bought my 60. Turned out timing was off.

That would make sense since it started out with a small amount of pinging, which got much worse. But......how does the timing change so dramatically?

The rubber of the OEM cam gear fails. This lets the gear teeth of the timing gear slip out of time. I'm with the toasted head gasket folks though... But instead of worrying about what it might be do a compression test and find out some real info. Then you'll KNOW what you need to do. ;)

Well I have not had a chance to do anything with my engine as of yet, and I will determine the cause of the issues soon.
However in the interim I picked up this little beauty. I will have this motor swapped in soon. My engine was very tired, even before these issues so this will hopefully give it some new life. I will keep you updated.

Ok well I did the compression test today, and here are the results (sad results):

Cylinder 1 (at radiator): 150

Cylinder 2: 130

Cylinder 3: 135

Cylinder 4: 135

Cylinder 5: 0

Cylinder 6 (at firewall): 0

So what exactly do the above numbers mean? Without questions cyl's 5 and 6 are dead. I also noticed today that it is smoking a good amount, with blue smoke, oil burning.

Thanks.
Zack

They mean the head has to come off and you need a head-gasket, and a valve job or at least the head surfaced and fluxed.

Is this on the engine in the truck or the new/used motor ?

Ya-you could get lucky here and just have a blown HG between 5 and 6. I would take those readings as good news, but you are going to have to pull the head.

I concur.

Could you do or have someone do a leakdown test ? Would tell you what was wrong with those 2 cylinders before pulling it apart.

1. Ignition timing
2. Carburetor issue or if fuel injected some sensor
3. Damaged molten CAT (Happened to me)

The compression test was done on the engine in my truck. The new/used engine is already at the shop, I am just ordering some new parts and gaskets to replace on the new engine while it is out of the truck.
Would a bad head gasket cause it to smoke seemingly so much oil?
Also cyl 5 and 6 plugs were black and wet.

Thanks,
Zack

you mentioned pinging? left go long enough, bad pinging will kill an HG. with no compression 5 and 6 would not be firing well if at all, yet still getting some gas. wet and black says gas and or water along with a poor burn of the fuel in there.
there are oil ports through the HG as well as coolant passages. depending how bad the HG failed, and with no compression readings in the last two cyl, it sounds bad, it could be getting oil sucked into those bad cylinders and either burned there or blown into the exhaust where it would be smoked off.

And so it begins....after a long delay! The hg just seems to have blown with no signs of other damage. How do things look?

Thanks,
Zack
