Is my engine about ready to say goodnight?

Well that's a textbook picture of a headgasket that's been subject to detonation. The pinging noise is supposed to be a warning. Probably nothing wrong with the bottom end if the oil is clean at 800 miles.

Yes, the oil looked clean, with no signs of anti-freeze mixed in. I NEED to get the timing dialed in correctly to prevent this from happening again!

make certain you don't have any intake leaks and that if you are desmogged, that you are using a recurved dizzy. also look for any sharp or high casting spots in the combustion chambers as they can also cause preignition when they get hot. might chech the brake booster for a vacuum leak...it takes its vacuum from the aft intake runners that lead to #5 and 6. if the booster is leaking alot of air, it can lean out the mix at those 2 cylinders.....

you might also want to drop the pan and pull off a cap or 2 to inspect the bearings

If the brake booster is going bad, should I notice a issue with the brakes? The last time I drove the truck was a year ago, but I recall the brakes being ok.

Progress! I received some parts from the Toyota dealer today.

The water pump was $80.00 and the head gasket kit was $212.00.

Just received the head back from the machine shop...I hope they did a good job. They replaced the springs as well, they claimed they were shot as well. The mechanic also drilled and tapped the oil galley plug.

Just got my motor back from the machine....had to yank head and replace gasket in correct position, so be mindful of the oil hole and gasket notch mating up; IOW, tab goes in back(sure you know).

There was more progress today, the head is back on the engine. It seems to be moving along smoothly.

Very nice job Zack, what happened with your used long block engine?spare?:D

Just in case you're unaware, the rocker shaft has to be oriented properly for the rocker arm assy to fit on the studs easily, and oil properly. There's a notch in the shaft for this. Also, I think it's the #4 tower has the oil circuit in it.

Well the used engine is waiting patiently for my dream FJ-60 build. I need a totally rust free body to swap the used engine into. Any leads?

I even have a great rust free frame! Shipping a body to NJ seems to be a big challenge.

Shipping a rust free body to NJ will be more rewarding and cheaper in the long run than trying to repair a salted basket case.
Just remember there are subtle differences in the frames and bodies in certain years. It will be less frustrating when you start using your parts stash if you have the right years that match.
