Hi,
I have an extended range tank on my 1988 FJ62 (leaking stock tank replacement), so I need somewhere to put my spare. I don't want to get an external tire carrier yet, so I'd like to store it vertically inside. I currently have it strapped to floor, but it takes up a lot of space. Has anyone done this and if so, how did you mount it? Any kits out there I could use? Pics would be great.
Thanks

My buddy @Str8Razor wants the same thing for the same reason he has an after market bumper and the long range tank may look into building one for him or helping him build one he has 35 inch tire but the strap down system would be the same for most tires

Check out page 3 of my build thread, in my sig. line.(Saving another FJ60). I used nut zerts for the bottom plate and also drilled holes all the way through the floor for the tie down bolts. It has been in for a couple years, with a lot of wheelin done, and is still solid.

What about getting a good compressor and carrying a plug kit (+ know how to use it). Short of a blowout, a plug kit is going to take care of most puncture flats. Leave the spare at home for trips around town.

For extended trips toss the spare in, cover it with a blanket and pile your luggage on it. It takes up the same amount of interior space regardless of how you orient it.

I don’t run my spare in town either, as it would be rare to have a flat, and if I did I can just get someone to run me home and get my spare. For trips, i like the interior mount idea, myself! Been drooling over all of the nice aftermarket bumpers but don’t like having a swing out to mess with on a daily basis, and unless the setup was modular, on trips either

Do you have measurements of your brackets? I can’t weld but Home Depot lumber department is a familiar place for me!

You could probably mount a piece of unistrut to the sill below the cargo window with nutserts, then pick from the 100’s of unistrut brackets to find something suitable to secure the rim/tire combo.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll take a look at what everyone offered and see what I can come up with.

I ordered a custom version of this. I will have eye hooks added to the floor of cargo area. It will sit upright on the drivers side and will have a drawer unit next to it. Will be working on it this week and will post pics when done.

I found a picture of my first one made from wood. If I remember correctly, I was able to put new in box air filter between the wood uprights. The wood does not extend out beyond the rear hatch opening, so it doesn't effect cargo capacity too much if you have the tire out to haul around junk or whatever.

I just removed the 2 rear panels on the driverside and rachet strapped it to some factory holes. Not glamourous but functional.

I mounted some L-track right below the window. That and a ratchet strap work great. You may also need a small piece of 2x4 to keep it off the glass depending on tire size. Mine is a 33x10.50 and I felt better with it wedged in there to keep the top of the tire off the glass.

I added a rear tire carrier as well, but I really miss the convenience of being able to pop open the back at the grocery store etc... I am planning on taking the carrier off and putting it back inside.
