looks like a capstain(sp) run of a PTO or something..........
 
Looks like a homemade hydraulic winch, perhaps run off of a power steering pump.
 
Looks like a reduction starter assembly from a big ass piece of machinery, mated to a output shaft cannibalized from a transmission (slide the dog for freewheel) welded to a big ole spur for a chain drive.

Thing must weigh 300#. I want one! :D :D
 
Pretty interesting. Not quite a capstan. Notice the cog for a hand crank on the front. I wonder what it is?
 
I'm guessing Military. Agree on the starter as I can see what I think is a solenoid, or Bendix. The hand crank is what makes me think it is Military.



Oh, and just keep your hand out of the chain! It is obviously not a California setup, udderwise there would be a sticker showing the chain and some severed fingers.
